Material Overview
Paper phenolic is a family of thermoset laminates made from layers of kraft paper impregnated with phenolic resin and cured under heat and pressure into rigid phenolic sheet and rod stock. Governed by NEMA LI-1 and ASTM D709, paper phenolic materials are the most economical option in the thermoset laminate lineup — offering reliable electrical insulation, consistent dimensional stability, and excellent machinability at a cost-effective price point suitable for high-volume electrical and industrial fabrication.
Paper phenolic grades are lighter and more electrically oriented than cotton phenolic, making them well suited for electrical panel components, terminal boards, coil formers, transformer spacers, and switchboard parts where mechanical loading is moderate. All grades machine cleanly with standard carbide tooling, cut without fraying, and hold good dimensional tolerances for precision electrical fabrication. The paper phenolic sheet laminate structure also enables efficient stamping and punching in production environments. Water absorption is low across all grades, supporting consistent dielectric performance in controlled environments.
Grades stocked by Ready Plastics. The paper phenolic family includes three NEMA grades. Grade X is the entry-level general-purpose grade for light electrical and industrial use. Grade XX is the standard mid-tier grade for switchboards, control panels, and general electrical systems. Grade XXX is the premium electrical grade delivering the highest dielectric strength and lowest moisture absorption in the family.
Paper phenolic vs. cotton phenolic. When impact strength, toughness, or heavy mechanical load are requirements, cotton phenolic laminates are the appropriate choice — the fabric reinforcement in canvas and linen grades provides far greater resistance to shock and sustained mechanical stress. Paper phenolic grades are optimized for electrical insulation at lower cost; cotton phenolic grades are optimized for mechanical performance. For the highest dielectric strength of all, glass-epoxy laminates provide the step up from XXX paper phenolic.
Frequently Asked Questions
Paper phenolic is a thermoset composite laminate made from layers of kraft paper impregnated with phenolic resin and cured under heat and pressure. It produces a rigid, lightweight sheet and rod material with reliable electrical insulation, good dimensional stability, and excellent machinability. Paper phenolic is governed by NEMA LI-1 and is widely used for electrical panel components, terminal boards, switchboard parts, transformer spacers, and coil formers.
The three grades differ primarily in electrical performance and moisture resistance. Grade X is the entry-level grade for general-purpose light electrical use. Grade XX improves on X with better dielectric consistency and is the standard choice for switchboards and control panels. Grade XXX is the highest electrical grade — it offers the best dielectric strength and the lowest moisture absorption (0.57% vs. 2.00% for X and XX), making it preferred for demanding electrical applications such as power distribution, transformer components, and industrial switchgear.
Ready Plastics stocks paper phenolic sheet in standard thicknesses and full sheet sizes, and rod in standard diameters. Cut-to-size service is available on all paper phenolic sheet and rod SKUs with a minimum order of one piece. See individual grade pages (X, XX, XXX) for specific size ranges, or contact us for current inventory.
Yes. Paper phenolic is one of the most machinable thermoset laminates. It cuts cleanly with standard carbide tooling on mills, lathes, drill presses, and routers. It also punches and stamps efficiently in production runs. Use sharp tooling, moderate feed rates, and dust extraction — phenolic dust is abrasive. Paper phenolic holds good tolerances but is more brittle than cotton phenolic grades under impact or heavy mechanical stress.
No. Paper phenolic uses kraft paper as the reinforcing substrate; cotton phenolic uses woven cotton fabric (canvas or linen weave). Cotton phenolic has significantly higher impact strength, toughness, and mechanical load capacity. Paper phenolic is lighter, less expensive, and better suited to electrical insulation applications where mechanical demands are moderate. Choose paper phenolic for electrical panel work; choose cotton phenolic for gears, bearings, and structural components.
