Material Overview

What is XX Paper Phenolic (NEMA XX) — Rod?

XX rod is the solid round-bar form of NEMA Grade XX paper-phenolic laminate — a thermoset composite produced by impregnating kraft paper with phenolic resin and curing under heat and pressure into a lightweight, machinable cylindrical stock. Grade XX is the workhorse mechanical-electrical grade of the paper-phenolic family, balancing low cost, easy machinability, and good performance under low-humidity conditions, making XX rod a practical choice for general-purpose insulating posts, terminal pins, and small machined parts.

XX rod delivers tensile strength of 14,000 psi, flexural strength of 16,000 psi, and compressive strength of 26,000 psi. Rockwell hardness reaches M105 and shear strength is approximately 11,000 psi. Water absorption over 24 hours is approximately 3.5% — higher than fabric-reinforced grades, so XX is best suited to dry environments. The material carries a UL 94HB flammability rating and operates continuously up to 250°F (121°C). Dielectric strength is approximately 500 V/mil short-time at 1/16″ thickness perpendicular to laminations. These properties make XX rod a low-cost choice for insulating posts, pulleys, low-load gears, and small machined hardware.

Standards & compliance. XX rod conforms to NEMA LI-1 Grade XX and meets defense specification MIL-I-24768/12 (Type PBE). Test methods follow ASTM D709. Ready Plastics stocks XX rod in standard diameters; request a custom cut or contact us for availability.

Sister grades. For improved electrical performance at slightly higher cost, Grade XXX paper-phenolic rod offers higher dielectric strength under humid conditions. For higher impact resistance, step up to Grade C cotton-phenolic rod or Grade CE cotton-phenolic rod. When mechanical strength and dimensional stability under moisture are critical, consider G-10 glass-epoxy rod.

Frequently Asked Questions

XX Paper Phenolic (NEMA XX) — Rod, answered

What is NEMA Grade XX paper phenolic?

NEMA Grade XX is the standard paper phenolic laminate — a thermoset composite of kraft paper layers impregnated with phenolic resin. It provides 35,000 psi tensile strength, reliable electrical insulation, and excellent machinability, making it the most commonly specified paper phenolic grade for switchboards, control panels, terminal boards, and general electrical fabrication. Grade XX is governed by NEMA LI-1.

What is the difference between Grade XX and Grade XXX paper phenolic?

Both grades are kraft-paper phenolic laminates, but Grade XXX is the premium electrical grade. XXX has lower water absorption (0.57% vs. 2.00% for XX) and delivers higher dielectric strength — critical for power distribution, transformer components, and applications that see electrical stress in humid environments. Grade XX is the economical standard for general electrical work; XXX is the upgrade for demanding dielectric applications.

What thicknesses and shapes does Ready Plastics stock in Grade XX?

Ready Plastics stocks Grade XX paper phenolic in sheet and rod form across a wide range of standard thicknesses and sheet sizes. XX paper phenolic sheet is one of the most commonly stocked phenolic laminate formats at Ready Plastics. Cut-to-size is available on every SKU — contact us or visit the product page for current inventory and minimum order details.

Can Grade XX paper phenolic be machined?

Yes. Grade XX is one of the most machinable thermoset laminates available. It cuts cleanly with carbide tooling on mills, lathes, and drill presses, and stamps or punches efficiently in production environments. Use sharp tooling, moderate speeds, and dust extraction. Paper phenolic is more brittle than cotton phenolic grades and is not appropriate for applications involving significant impact or mechanical shock.

Is Grade XX paper phenolic the same as Grade X?

They share the same mechanical specs — 35,000 psi tensile, 34,000 psi flexural, 17,000 psi compressive — and the same NEMA LI-1 governance. The key difference is that Grade XX provides more consistent dielectric performance and is the recognized industry standard for electrical applications. Grade X is the entry-level option for less demanding use. When in doubt, XX is the default paper phenolic specification for most electrical fabrication work.
