Material Overview
G10 rod is the cylindrical round-bar form of NEMA G-10 glass-epoxy laminate — a thermoset composite of woven fiberglass cloth impregnated with epoxy resin. The rod form is produced by rolling or mandrel-winding the glass-epoxy prepreg and curing under heat and pressure, yielding a dense, dimensionally stable bar suited to lathe turning and CNC machining. G10 rod is widely specified for insulating bushings, standoffs, spacers, and structural rollers that must resist moisture and electrical stress.
G10 rod exhibits tensile strength of 40,000 psi, flexural strength of 75,000 psi, and compressive strength of 65,000 psi. Rockwell hardness is M110 and shear strength reaches 19,000 psi. Water absorption over 24 hours is just 0.11%, one of the lowest values among laminate grades, ensuring tight dimensional tolerances are maintained even in wet or humid service. Maximum continuous operating temperature is 280°F (140°C) with a 94HB flammability rating.
Standards & compliance. G10 rod conforms to NEMA LI-1 Grade G-10 and is tested to ASTM D709. G10 does not carry a UL 94 V-0 flame rating; applications requiring flame retardancy should use FR-4 rod. Ready Plastics stocks G10 rod in standard diameters as cut-to-length pieces; contact us for current size availability.
Sister grades. For flame-retardant turned parts, FR-4 glass-epoxy rod provides UL 94 V-0 performance with near-identical mechanical properties. Step up to G-11 glass-epoxy rod when continuous service temperatures exceed 280°F, as G-11 is rated to 355°F (180°C). For the highest thermal performance in a glass-reinforced thermoset, G-7 glass-silicone rod handles continuous service to 425°F (220°C).
Frequently Asked Questions
G10 rod is a solid round bar made from NEMA G-10 glass-epoxy laminate — woven fiberglass impregnated with epoxy resin and cured under heat and pressure. It offers a tensile strength of 40,000 psi, compressive strength of 65,000 psi, and only 0.11% water absorption, making it an excellent choice for insulating bushings, standoffs, and structural rollers requiring dimensional stability in humid environments.
Ready Plastics stocks G10 glass-epoxy rod in standard diameters available as cut-to-length pieces. Contact us for current diameter and length availability and custom-cut options.
G10 rod is turned and machined using carbide tooling. The woven fiberglass reinforcement is highly abrasive, so carbide inserts are strongly preferred over HSS. Moderate cutting speeds, positive rake tooling, and frequent tool inspection maintain dimensional accuracy. Dust and fiber extraction are important for operator safety when turning or drilling G10 rod.
G10 rod and G10 sheet are both NEMA G-10 glass-epoxy material, but in different forms. Rod is a solid cylindrical bar used for turned and bored components such as bushings, spacers, and rollers. Sheet is a flat panel used for milled insulators, jig plates, and structural panels. The base mechanical and electrical properties are the same for both forms.
G10 rod is used for electrical insulating bushings, shaft spacers, standoffs, guide rollers, bearing sleeves, and structural supports in electrical equipment, semiconductor tooling, and industrial machinery. Its low moisture absorption (0.11% over 24 hours) and high compressive strength (65,000 psi) make it well-suited for precision components that must maintain tight tolerances.
