Material Overview

What is G-10 Glass Epoxy Laminate — Sheet & Rod?

G10 material is a woven-fiberglass/epoxy thermoset laminate classified under NEMA LI-1 Grade G-10. It belongs to the glass epoxy family — composites made from woven glass cloth impregnated with epoxy resin and cured under heat and pressure into rigid sheet, rod, and tube stock. G10 is the non-flame-retardant baseline of the family and is valued for its excellent strength-to-weight ratio, dimensional stability, and reliable dielectric performance across a wide range of industrial and structural applications.

G10 material delivers 40,000 psi tensile strength, 75,000 psi flexural strength, and a notably high 65,000 psi compressive strength. Water absorption over 24 hours is only 0.11% — keeping dimensional changes minimal in humid or immersed environments. Maximum continuous service temperature is 280°F (140°C). G10 plastic is rated UL 94HB. Available as g10 sheet and g10 rod, it is widely specified for terminal boards, structural spacers, insulating barriers, jigs, fixtures, and precision-machined parts. The g10 fiberglass sheet format is particularly common for cut-to-size electrical insulation work.

Standards. G10 meets NEMA LI-1 Grade G-10 and is tested per ASTM D709 for laminated thermosetting materials. It is not flame retardant (94HB rated) — applications requiring a flame-rated variant should specify NEMA g10-equivalent grade FR-4 instead.

Grade comparisons. Choose FR-4 when UL 94 V-0 flame retardance is required — it shares a similar property profile with the addition of flame-retardant additives. Step up to G-11 when continuous service temperatures exceed 140°C or when higher flexural retention at temperature is needed. For flame-retardant high-temperature service, see FR-5. Ready Plastics stocks G10 sheet and rod — request a datasheet for dimensions and tolerances.

Frequently Asked Questions

G-10 Glass Epoxy Laminate — Sheet & Rod, answered

What is G10 material?

G10 material is a NEMA LI-1 Grade G-10 glass-reinforced epoxy thermoset laminate. It is made from woven fiberglass cloth bonded with epoxy resin and is known for its high mechanical strength, excellent electrical insulation, low moisture absorption (0.11%), and good machinability. Common forms include G10 sheet and G10 rod for structural, insulation, and precision-machined applications.

What is the difference between G10 material and FR-4?

G10 and FR-4 share essentially the same woven fiberglass/epoxy construction and very similar mechanical properties. The key difference is flammability: FR-4 carries a UL 94 V-0 rating and contains flame-retardant additives; G10 is rated 94HB and is not inherently flame retardant. Use G10 plastic where fire-safety codes do not require a V-0 rating; switch to FR-4 where they do.

What is the difference between G10 and G-11?

G-11 is engineered for higher operating temperatures — up to 180°C (355°F) versus 140°C (280°F) for G10. Both share a glass epoxy construction, but G-11 uses a resin system with a higher glass transition temperature. G10 is the standard choice for most applications; G-11 is specified when sustained elevated temperature performance is required.

What thicknesses and shapes does Ready Plastics stock in G10?

Ready Plastics stocks G10 material in flat sheet and round rod forms. Specific sizes and thicknesses are listed on the product page or available on request. Custom cut-to-size G10 sheet and rod sections can also be supplied.

Can G10 be machined?

Yes — G10 material has excellent machinability and is one of the easier thermoset laminates to work with. It can be drilled, milled, sawed, punched, and turned on conventional shop equipment. Carbide tooling is recommended for longer runs because the woven glass reinforcement is abrasive. Dust extraction is advisable.

Is G10 the same as fiberglass?

G10 is a fiberglass-reinforced laminate — it uses woven fiberglass cloth as its reinforcement — but it is not the same as loose fiberglass or chopped-strand fiberglass mat. The woven glass fabric in G10 is bonded with a thermoset epoxy resin, producing a dense, rigid, machinable plate or rod with controlled electrical and mechanical properties.
