Material Overview

What is Cast Nylon Rod?

Cast nylon sheet and rod is an engineering thermoplastic produced by a casting process that yields higher crystallinity than extruded nylon — resulting in superior load-bearing capability, outstanding wear resistance, and low friction across demanding mechanical environments. Ready Plastics stocks cast nylon in sheet, rod, and custom-cut forms for direct use in component fabrication.

The casting process distinguishes this family from extruded grades. Greater molecular alignment during solidification produces a denser, harder material with enhanced abrasion resistance, making cast nylon the preferred choice for heavy-duty bearings, wear pads, rollers, and gears that must handle continuous motion and load. The material is also lightweight relative to comparable metals, enabling straightforward metal-replacement without sacrificing performance.

Machinability and fabrication. Cast nylon machines cleanly on conventional shop equipment — drilling, turning, milling, and sawing all produce tight tolerances with minimal tool wear. Low friction and self-lubricating properties mean finished components often operate without added lubrication, reducing maintenance overhead in automated and mechanical systems.

Grade selection. Ready Plastics offers Cast Nylon 6 (PA 6) as the core cast grade, providing 12,300 psi tensile strength, 15,000 psi compressive stress, and a continuous service temperature up to 220°F. For extruded nylon options across the broader polyamide family, see the nylon materials overview covering PA6, PA66, PA12, PA612, and PPA grades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cast Nylon Rod, answered

What is cast nylon?

Cast nylon is a polyamide engineering plastic produced by pouring liquid monomer into a mold where it polymerizes in place, rather than being extruded from pellets. The casting process results in higher crystallinity and improved load-bearing capability compared to extruded nylon, making it well suited for gears, bushings, wear pads, and rollers in industrial applications.

What is the difference between cast nylon and extruded nylon?

Cast nylon is polymerized directly in a mold, yielding higher crystallinity, greater load-bearing strength, and better wear resistance than extruded nylon. Extruded nylon — such as PA6, PA66, or PA12 — is processed from pellets and offers tighter dimensional control in thin sections and a wider range of modified grades. Cast nylon is preferred for heavy-duty mechanical parts; extruded grades suit precision components and lighter-duty applications.

What shapes and sizes does Ready Plastics stock in cast nylon?

Ready Plastics stocks cast nylon in sheet and rod form. Contact Ready Plastics for current dimensions, thickness ranges, and diameter availability, or request a custom cut-to-size quote.

Can cast nylon be machined?

Yes. Cast nylon machines readily on standard shop equipment using conventional cutting tools. It drills, turns, mills, and saws cleanly, holding tight tolerances for precision components such as bushings, wear blocks, and structural parts.

Is cast nylon the same as nylon 6?

Cast nylon is typically based on polyamide 6 (PA6) chemistry, but the production method — casting rather than extrusion — creates a different microstructure. Ready Plastics' cast nylon grade is Cast Nylon 6 (PA 6), offering higher crystallinity and improved mechanical performance compared to extruded PA6 sheet and rod.
