Noryl Rod — Modified PPO Round Stock Sizes and Uses

Noryl rod is the primary stock form for machined transformer bobbins, relay components, electrical standoffs, coil formers, and cylindrical electrical housings. EN265 (natural tan/gray, UL 94 V-0) is the standard rod grade for electrical applications; GFN3 (black, 30% glass-filled, V-0) provides higher stiffness and HDT for structural electrical parts. Both grades are available in 4-ft lengths.

At a glance:

  • Diameters: 0.500" – 6.0" in 4-ft standard lengths
  • Primary grade: EN265 (natural tan/gray, V-0) — electrical standard
  • Structural grade: GFN3 (black, V-0, glass-filled) — higher stiffness and HDT
  • UL 94 V-0 at ≥0.030" wall for both grades
  • Very low moisture absorption (0.07%) — stable dimensions in humid environments
  • No pre-drying required; machine immediately from stock

Why Rod for Electrical Parts

Rod stock is ideal for turned cylindrical electrical components: bobbins, coil formers, standoffs, insulators, and bushings. Starting from rod minimizes material waste for cylindrical geometries and allows efficient CNC lathe turning of both OD and bore in a single setup — critical for concentricity in coil formers where winding uniformity depends on bobbin geometry.

For flat or prismatic electrical components (housings, plates, terminal blocks), start from Noryl sheet.

Noryl GFN3 Rod (Black, Glass-Filled)

GFN3 rod is available in the most common sizes (0.500" – 3.0") but is less widely stocked than EN265. Confirm availability with Ready Plastics before specifying GFN3 rod.

Machining Noryl Rod

EN265 (unfilled):

  • Turning: 400–600 SFM; 0.005–0.010 IPR finishing; positive-rake carbide or sharp HSS
  • Achievable tolerance: ±0.001" on turned OD and bore diameters

GFN3 (glass-filled):

  • Turning: 350–550 SFM; carbide required; TiAlN coated preferred
  • Achieve tolerance: ±0.001" with appropriate tooling; expect shorter insert life than EN265

Key Applications for Noryl Rod

  • Transformer bobbins and coil formers: Turned from EN265 rod; V-0 flame rating; low dielectric constant minimizes stray capacitance
  • Relay and solenoid housings: CNC-turned cylindrical bodies; V-0 required for electrical apparatus
  • Electrical standoffs and spacers: Precise length and bore tolerances; insulating dimensions between PCB and chassis
  • Coaxial connector bodies: Low ε' (2.65) minimizes impedance mismatch at high frequency
