G10 Rod — Diameters, Lengths & Tolerances

G10 rod is round stock produced from NEMA G10 glass-epoxy laminate — the same material as G10 sheet but in rod form, typically manufactured by compression molding or filament winding. G10 rod is the starting stock for machined insulators, standoffs, bushings, spacers, and structural components where cylindrical geometry reduces material removal compared to starting from flat sheet. Standard diameters run from 0.125" through 4.0"; custom diameters and lengths are available to order.

At a glance:

  • Diameter range: 0.125" to 4.0" standard; larger OD to order
  • Standard lengths: 4 ft and 8 ft
  • OD tolerance: +0.000" / −0.015" (small diameter) to +0.000" / −0.030" (large)
  • Material: NEMA G10 glass-epoxy laminate per NEMA LI 1
  • Production method: compression-molded or filament-wound
  • Color: natural (green/olive) or black
  • SERP note: G10 rod has commercial shopping intent — standard sizes are shelf-stock items

Standard Diameter and Length Table

G10 rod is stocked in the following standard diameters and lengths. All diameters are available in 4-ft lengths; larger diameters above 2.0" are typically stocked in 4-ft only.

OD Tolerances

G10 rod is produced to standard dimensional tolerances per NEMA LI 1 and common commercial practice:

G10 rod OD tolerances are negative-only (on the minus side). The rod will never be oversize relative to nominal. This is consistent with standard practice for insulating rod stock and ensures the part fits pre-dimensioned holes or fixtures. If your application requires a specific fit, machine to final OD from the stock rod dimension.

Production Methods

Compression-Molded Rod

The most common production method for G10 rod at smaller diameters (up to approximately 2"). The process lays up cut glass-cloth plies and resin in a cylindrical mold, then cures under elevated temperature and pressure. Compression-molded rod has good dimensional uniformity and solid cross-section; the glass plies run roughly transverse to the rod axis.

Filament-Wound Rod

At larger diameters (above 2" and for hollow sections), filament winding wraps glass rovings around a mandrel in a controlled spiral pattern before cure. Filament-wound rod has excellent hoop strength and can be produced with specific winding angles for anisotropic strength profiles. Filament-wound is the standard production method for G10 tube (see G10 tube).

Material Properties (Rod)

Properties of G10 rod are governed by NEMA LI 1 Grade G10. Because rod is produced by compression molding, the glass-cloth orientation is somewhat random (plies cut from sheet and stacked), resulting in more isotropic properties than laminated flat sheet. The following values are typical:

Applications for G10 Rod

G10 rod's round cross-section makes it the efficient starting stock for:

Turned Insulators and Standoffs

Hex standoffs, round spacers, and cylindrical bushings are the most common parts machined from G10 rod. The material turns cleanly on CNC lathes with carbide tooling at 300–500 SFM. OD and length can be held to ±0.002" in production. See the G10 machining guide for full turning parameters.

Electrical Insulating Bushings

Through-hole insulating bushings — used to isolate bolts, shafts, or conductors from surrounding metal structure — are efficiently produced from G10 rod. The rod OD is close to the final part OD, minimizing material removal. Drill and bore for ID to fit.

Structural Support Pins and Dowels

Where insulating pins or alignment dowels are needed in electrical assemblies, G10 rod provides dimensional stability, adequate shear strength (~19,000 psi), and machinability.

Knife Handle Pins

Round G10 rod is used for handle pins in custom knife construction — both as structural through-pins and as decorative tube spacers. Rod sizes from 1/8" to 5/16" are most common in knife making.

Comparison: G10 Rod vs FR4 Rod

G10 rod and FR4 rod have the same mechanical properties and dimensional characteristics. The distinction is flame rating:

PropertyG10 RodFR4 Rod
Flame RatingUL94 HBUL94 V-0
Mechanical PropertiesEqualEqual
Electrical PropertiesEqualEqual
Halogen ContentNoneBrominated
Relative Cost$$ (similar)

When a design specifies FR4 due to flame-rating requirements, G10 rod is not a compliant substitute. For designs where flame rating is not a factor, G10 and FR4 rod are functionally interchangeable. See the G10 vs FR4 comparison for full details.

Custom and Special Rod

Beyond standard round rod, special G10 rod forms are available to order:

  • Oversized rod: Diameters above 4.0" — compression-molded billets to customer OD
  • Close-tolerance rod: OD tolerance tightened to ±0.005" by centerless grinding
  • Square and rectangular rod: Extruded or molded G10 bar stock in non-round cross-sections
  • Half-round and custom profiles: Machined from full-round rod stock
