CE Phenolic Machined Parts

NEMA Grade CE is the canvas-reinforced phenolic formulated for electrical applications. Its woven-cotton canvas filler delivers better impact resistance and machinability than paper phenolics, while the phenolic resin matrix provides the dielectric properties needed for insulators, coil forms, and switchgear components operating at moderate temperatures. Federal Materials machines CE phenolic to customer prints from stocked rod, sheet, and tube — with hot oil dip finishing available for interior features that require enhanced moisture resistance.

What We Machine in CE Phenolic

  • Electrical insulators — flat, contoured, and profiled geometries
  • Coil forms and bobbins — turned from rod or tube stock
  • Terminal and panel boards — drilled grid patterns, routed profiles
  • Switchgear spacers and barriers — interphase and arc-resistant configurations
  • Bushings and sleeves — close-tolerance ID/OD for low-speed rotating equipment
  • Standoffs and spacers — hex and round, smooth or threaded bore
  • Mounting brackets and base plates — structural electrical enclosure components
  • Custom washers and shims — flat, step-ground to print

Typical Tolerances

Dimension typeProduction tolerance
Critical turned dims (OD/ID)±0.0005"
General machined dims±0.005"
Hole location (CNC milled)±0.002"
Flatness (plates ≤ 12")±0.005"
Thread class2B/3B per print

Canvas phenolic machines freely and holds tolerances well on both rod-turned and milled-plate parts. Note that phenolic is hygroscopic — store finished parts dry and specify hot oil dip when moisture exposure is anticipated.

Finish Options

FinishDescription
As-machinedNatural phenolic surface, deburred, edges broken
Hot oil dipParts immersed in hot mineral or paraffin oil to seal cut surfaces and enhance moisture resistance — standard recommendation for interior features
Machined-to-spec edgesChamfered or radiused per drawing
No platingCE phenolic does not require metallic surface treatment

Hot oil dip is the preferred post-machining treatment for phenolic parts used in humid or outdoor-adjacent environments. Specify on your RFQ.

Applications & Industries Served

CE canvas phenolic parts are specified across a wide range of electrical OEM and MRO applications:

  • Switchgear and motor control centers — interphase insulators, arc barriers, terminal boards
  • Electric motors and generators — coil form and slot insulation components; bushing blanks for end-bracket bearings
  • Utility and power distribution equipment — live-part insulators, bus support spacers
  • Industrial controls and relays — mounting plates, insulating bases
  • MRO replacement parts — direct-replacement machined parts for legacy switchgear and transformer assemblies
  • OEM electrical assemblies — custom-designed insulating components machined to new prints

CE phenolic is a proven material in legacy and current-production electrical equipment. If your existing design calls for CE grade, we can match the specification exactly. If you are designing new and evaluating CE against G10 or FR4, contact our application engineers — we will help you select the right laminate for your operating conditions, temperature, and compliance requirements.

Quality & Inspection

  • Dimensional inspection — in-process and final to print; CMM first-article on request
  • Dielectric withstand testing — hipot testing available for electrical insulator applications
  • Hot oil dip process control — oil temperature and immersion time logged per batch
  • Visual inspection — delamination, chip-out, burr-free edges
  • Material certification — lot traceability, C of C to NEMA LI-1 CE grade
