Material Overview

What is FR-4 Flame-Retardant Glass Epoxy — Sheet & Rod?

FR4 is a flame-retardant glass-reinforced epoxy laminate defined by NEMA standard LI-1 and classified as Grade FR-4. It belongs to the glass epoxy family — thermoset composites manufactured from woven fiberglass cloth impregnated with epoxy resin and cured under heat and pressure into rigid sheet, rod, and tube stock. The combination of woven glass reinforcement and epoxy binder makes FR4 one of the most widely specified fr4 material grades in electrical insulation and structural applications.

FR4 delivers 65,000 psi tensile strength, 60,000 psi flexural strength, and 38,000 psi compressive strength with a Rockwell M115 hardness. Water absorption over 24 hours is only 0.10%, giving FR4 sheet excellent dimensional stability in humid environments. Maximum continuous service temperature is 280°F (140°C). These properties make FR4 laminate an industry default for printed circuit boards, transformer components, electrical enclosures, and precision-machined insulating parts.

Standards. FR4 meets NEMA LI-1 Grade FR-4 requirements and carries a UL 94 V-0 flammability rating — self-extinguishing with vertical flame exposure. This fr4 plastic grade is also compliant with ASTM D709 test methods for laminated thermosetting materials.

Related grades. When flame retardance is not required, G-10 glass epoxy offers a similar property profile at a cost advantage. For higher operating temperatures, step up to G-11 or FR-5, both of which extend continuous service to 180°C while maintaining flame-retardant performance. Ready Plastics stocks FR4 in sheet and rod forms — contact us or request a datasheet for available sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

FR-4 Flame-Retardant Glass Epoxy — Sheet & Rod, answered

What is FR4?

FR4 is a NEMA LI-1 Grade FR-4 glass-reinforced epoxy laminate. It is manufactured from woven fiberglass cloth bonded with epoxy resin, then cured under heat and pressure. FR4 is widely used for printed circuit boards, electrical insulation panels, and structural components requiring UL 94 V-0 flame retardance and high mechanical strength.

What is the difference between FR4 and G-10?

FR4 and G-10 share a similar woven fiberglass/epoxy construction but differ in flammability. FR4 carries a UL 94 V-0 flame rating and contains flame-retardant additives; G-10 is rated 94HB and is not inherently flame retardant. Both grades offer comparable mechanical strength, so the choice typically comes down to whether fire-safety code compliance is required.

What is the difference between FR4 and FR-5?

Both are flame-retardant glass epoxy laminates, but FR-5 is engineered for higher operating temperatures — up to 180°C (355°F) versus 140°C (280°F) for FR4. FR-5 also offers higher flexural strength (75,000 psi vs. 60,000 psi). Choose FR-5 when thermal performance under load is the primary requirement.

What thicknesses and shapes does Ready Plastics stock in FR4?

Ready Plastics stocks FR4 in flat sheet and rod forms. Specific available thicknesses and diameters are listed on the FR4 product page or available on request. Custom cut-to-size pieces are also available.

Can FR4 be machined?

Yes. FR4 machines well on conventional shop equipment — it can be drilled, milled, sawed, and punched. Carbide tooling is recommended because the woven glass reinforcement causes moderate tool wear. Dust extraction is advisable during machining.
