Machined Delrin Parts

Delrin (acetal homopolymer, DuPont) is the go-to engineering plastic for machined mechanical parts that need low friction, good stiffness, and tight tolerances at an economical price point. It machines faster than most other engineering plastics, holds dimensions well in moderate environments, and delivers a smooth, self-lubricating surface straight off the machine — no secondary finishing required for most applications.

Federal Materials machines Delrin to customer prints in any quantity, from single prototypes to production runs of thousands. We stock Delrin rod, sheet, and plate in standard and custom sizes, and our CNC turning and milling cells deliver consistent tolerances run-to-run. If you are specifying acetal for your part, confirm whether Delrin (homopolymer) or acetal copolymer is the right choice — they are related but distinct materials with different weld-line behavior and chemical resistance profiles.

What We Machine in Delrin

  • Gears and gear blanks — spur, bevel, worm; turned and hobbed or CNC milled
  • Bushings and plain bearings — close-tolerance ID/OD, self-lubricating
  • Cams and cam followers — custom profiles CNC milled from plate
  • Valve bodies and seats — food-grade and water-service applications
  • Rollers and guide rollers — OD-turned to fine finish
  • Standoffs and spacers — hex and round, threaded and through-bore
  • Structural brackets and panels — drilled, tapped, counterbored
  • Pulleys and sheaves — turned OD, bored and keyway-cut
  • Prototypes and one-off parts — same-week delivery from stock

Typical Tolerances

Dimension typeProduction tolerance
Critical turned dims (OD/ID)±0.001"
General machined dims±0.005"
Hole location (CNC milled)±0.003"
Flatness (plates ≤ 12")±0.005"
Thread form2B/3B per print

Delrin exhibits some moisture-related dimensional change in humid environments — approximately 0.001" per inch across the grain for standard Delrin 150. For close-tolerance applications in high-humidity environments, discuss stabilization options at time of RFQ.

Finish Options

FinishDescription
As-machinedNatural white/black Delrin surface — smooth, self-lubricating, no treatment needed
Machined-to-spec edgesChamfered or radiused per drawing callout
Painted / markedLaser marking or customer-specified marking available
No platingDelrin does not require passivation or metallic surface treatment

Delrin's natural surface is suitable for most mechanical applications. For food contact, specify FDA-compliant Delrin grade on your RFQ.

Standard Turnaround

StageLead time
Quote responseSame business day
Prototype / first article (1–5 pcs)2–3 business days
Short run (6–50 pcs)3–7 business days
Production run (50+ pcs)7–12 business days

Delrin is one of the fastest-machining engineering plastics, and we maintain deep stock. Turnaround times for Delrin parts are typically the shortest of any engineering plastic we machine.
