Material Overview
Paper phenolic Grade XX is a thermoset laminate constructed from layers of kraft paper impregnated with phenolic resin and cured under heat and pressure into rigid phenolic sheet and rod stock. As the standard mid-tier grade in the paper phenolic family governed by NEMA LI-1, Grade XX is the most widely specified paper phenolic grade — chosen wherever consistent electrical insulation, dimensional stability, and excellent machinability are needed in switchboards, control panels, and general electrical systems.
Grade XX delivers 35,000 psi tensile strength, 34,000 psi flexural strength, and 17,000 psi compressive strength with a Rockwell M120 hardness and a water absorption of 2.00% over 24 hours. Maximum continuous operating temperature reaches 280°F (140°C). The paper phenolic laminate structure machines cleanly into terminal boards, transformer spacers, coil formers, panel inserts, and switchboard components, making xx grade the standard stock choice for electrical fabrication shops.
Standards. Grade XX is governed by NEMA LI-1. Flammability is rated 94HB per UL 94. Test methods follow ASTM D709 for laminated thermosetting materials. The XX designation is the most recognized standard-grade identifier in the paper phenolic family and appears on drawings and specs throughout the electrical industry.
Sister grades. Step down to Grade X — paper phenolic, entry-level grade when cost is the sole criterion and dielectric consistency is not critical. Step up to Grade XXX — paper phenolic, premium electrical grade when your application demands the lowest moisture absorption and highest dielectric strength in the paper phenolic family. For applications requiring mechanical toughness alongside insulation, see cotton phenolic grades.
Technical Specifications
Typical values at 23°C / 50% RH. Values are nominal and not guaranteed; refer to lot-specific certificates of conformance for production parts.
Frequently Asked Questions
NEMA Grade XX is the standard paper phenolic laminate — a thermoset composite of kraft paper layers impregnated with phenolic resin. It provides 35,000 psi tensile strength, reliable electrical insulation, and excellent machinability, making it the most commonly specified paper phenolic grade for switchboards, control panels, terminal boards, and general electrical fabrication. Grade XX is governed by NEMA LI-1.
Both grades are kraft-paper phenolic laminates, but Grade XXX is the premium electrical grade. XXX has lower water absorption (0.57% vs. 2.00% for XX) and delivers higher dielectric strength — critical for power distribution, transformer components, and applications that see electrical stress in humid environments. Grade XX is the economical standard for general electrical work; XXX is the upgrade for demanding dielectric applications.
Ready Plastics stocks Grade XX paper phenolic in sheet and rod form across a wide range of standard thicknesses and sheet sizes. XX paper phenolic sheet is one of the most commonly stocked phenolic laminate formats at Ready Plastics. Yes. Grade XX is one of the most machinable thermoset laminates available. It cuts cleanly with carbide tooling on mills, lathes, and drill presses, and stamps or punches efficiently in production environments. Use sharp tooling, moderate speeds, and dust extraction. Paper phenolic is more brittle than cotton phenolic grades and is not appropriate for applications involving significant impact or mechanical shock.
They share the same mechanical specs — 35,000 psi tensile, 34,000 psi flexural, 17,000 psi compressive — and the same NEMA LI-1 governance. The key difference is that Grade XX provides more consistent dielectric performance and is the recognized industry standard for electrical applications. Grade X is the entry-level option for less demanding use. When in doubt, XX is the default paper phenolic specification for most electrical fabrication work.
