Material Overview
Glass phenolic is a family of woven-glass-fabric/phenolic-resin thermoset laminates defined by NEMA LI-1. These composites are manufactured by impregnating woven glass cloth with phenolic resin and curing under heat and pressure into rigid phenolic sheet and structural stock. Compared to paper-based phenolics, the woven glass reinforcement raises tensile strength substantially and improves dimensional stability under mechanical load. Ready Plastics stocks glass phenolic grade G-3, the standard NEMA designation in this family.
Glass phenolic laminates strike a practical balance between cost and performance. The glass cloth reinforcement provides strong mechanical integrity — up to 76,000 psi tensile strength in the G-3 grade — while the phenolic resin offers good chemical resistance and a maximum continuous service temperature of 140°C (280°F). These properties make glass phenolic a well-established choice for switchgear panels, terminal boards, insulating spacers, electrical enclosures, and structural components in industrial electrical systems. The glass phenolic grade also serves as a cost-effective stepping-stone to higher-performance epoxy grades when mechanical demands increase.
Standards and performance context. Glass phenolic grades meet NEMA LI-1 and are tested per ASTM D709. Moisture absorption is higher in phenolic grades than in glass epoxy alternatives — a consideration for applications in humid or wet environments. For superior moisture resistance and dielectric strength, glass epoxy grades (G-10, FR-4) are more appropriate. For arc and track resistance with flame retardance, glass melamine G-9 is the preferred option.
Related materials. Ready Plastics carries the full range of thermoset laminates: glass melamine for high-voltage arc-resistance, glass epoxy for moisture-critical and high-strength insulation, and glass silicone for extreme-temperature service. All glass-reinforced families are part of the broader thermoset laminates and phenolics lineup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Glass phenolic is a thermoset laminate family made from woven glass cloth bonded with phenolic resin. NEMA Grade G-3 is the standard grade in this family. Glass phenolic provides strong mechanical performance, good electrical insulation, and chemical resistance, making it suitable for switchgear, terminal boards, insulating spacers, and industrial electrical components.
Glass phenolic uses phenolic resin as its binder; glass epoxy uses epoxy resin. Glass epoxy grades (G-10, FR-4) offer lower moisture absorption and stronger dielectric performance in humid environments. Glass phenolic is a cost-effective option for drier environments where the higher moisture absorption of phenolic resin is acceptable.
Ready Plastics stocks G-3 glass phenolic, which meets NEMA LI-1 Grade G-3. Contact Ready Plastics for available sheet sizes and thicknesses.
Glass phenolic is stocked in flat sheet form at Ready Plastics. Specific thicknesses and dimensions are listed on the G-3 product page or available on request.
Yes. Glass phenolic can be drilled, sawed, milled, and punched on conventional shop equipment. As with all glass-reinforced laminates, carbide tooling is recommended and dust extraction is advisable during machining.
