Material Overview
LE rod is the solid round-bar form of NEMA Grade LE linen-phenolic laminate — a thermoset composite produced by impregnating fine-weave linen fabric with phenolic resin and curing under heat and pressure into dense, machinable cylindrical stock. The fine linen reinforcement gives LE the best dielectric performance of the cotton-phenolic family, while preserving the easy machinability and surface finish that make phenolic laminates a workshop favorite. LE rod is the preferred choice for turned electrical insulators, terminal posts, and small precision-machined parts.
LE rod delivers tensile strength of 17,000 psi, flexural strength of 18,000 psi, and compressive strength of 36,000 psi. Rockwell hardness reaches M100 and shear strength is approximately 13,500 psi. Water absorption over 24 hours is approximately 1.75%. The material carries a UL 94HB flammability rating and operates continuously up to 250°F (121°C). Dielectric strength is approximately 200 V/mil short-time at 1/16″ thickness — the highest of any cotton-phenolic grade. These properties make LE rod a strong choice for turned electrical standoffs, insulating bushings, terminal posts, and small precision parts where dielectric performance matters.
Standards & compliance. LE rod conforms to NEMA LI-1 Grade LE and meets defense specification MIL-I-24768/16 (Type FBM). Test methods follow ASTM D709. Ready Plastics stocks LE rod in standard diameters; request a custom cut or contact us for availability.
Sister grades. For lower cost when peak electrical performance is not required, Grade L phenolic rod uses a coarser cotton weave. For higher impact resistance with coarser cotton, Grade CE phenolic rod is the standard choice. When higher mechanical strength, lower moisture absorption, and significantly better dielectric performance are needed, step up to G-10 glass-epoxy rod or FR-4 glass-epoxy rod.
