Material Overview

What is PC GF20?

PC GF20 is a 20% glass-fiber-reinforced grade of polycarbonate (PC), engineered for applications requiring greater stiffness and dimensional stability than unfilled polycarbonate or the lightly reinforced PC GF10 grade can provide. The higher glass fiber loading significantly increases flexural modulus and reduces thermal expansion, resulting in a material that holds geometry more precisely under load and across temperature variation.

PC GF20 maintains good impact resistance relative to other 20%-filled engineering thermoplastics — a key reason it is specified when structural stiffness and toughness must coexist. The semi-rigid reinforced structure also improves resistance to creep under sustained loading and reduces the risk of warpage in precision assemblies.

Typical applications include structural brackets, housings with tight dimensional requirements, industrial fixtures, and load-bearing components where unfilled or lightly filled polycarbonate deflects or creeps unacceptably. PC GF20 is commonly selected for precision mechanical assemblies in electronics, industrial automation, and general engineering.

For lower stiffness with better impact performance, see PC GF10 or unfilled PC. Contact Ready Plastics for stock dimensions and to request a quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

PC GF20, answered

What is PC GF20?

PC GF20 is polycarbonate reinforced with 20% glass fiber, providing significantly higher stiffness and dimensional stability compared to unfilled PC or PC GF10. It is designed for structural and precision applications where the base polycarbonate shows too much deflection or creep.

How does PC GF20 differ from PC GF10?

PC GF20 contains 20% glass fiber versus 10% in PC GF10. The additional reinforcement increases stiffness and reduces creep further, but at a small cost in impact toughness. Choose PC GF20 for maximum rigidity; choose PC GF10 when a better balance of stiffness and impact resistance is needed.

Is PC GF20 transparent?

No. Glass reinforcement makes PC GF20 opaque. For transparent polycarbonate applications, use unfilled PC.

What shapes does Ready Plastics stock in PC GF20?

Ready Plastics stocks PC GF20 in rod and flat plate for precision machining. Contact us for current dimensions and availability.

Can PC GF20 be machined?

Yes. PC GF20 machines well with carbide tooling. Glass fibers increase tool wear compared to unfilled polycarbonate, so sharp carbide inserts and appropriate feeds and speeds are important for best results.
