Material Overview

What is PA6 Rod?

PA6 material (polyamide 6) is one of the most widely used extruded nylon plastics in industrial applications, combining mechanical strength, impact toughness, abrasion resistance, and excellent machinability in a single material. Ready Plastics stocks PA6 in sheet and rod, making it a versatile starting point for machined components in general industrial equipment, automation systems, material handling, and mechanical assemblies.

PA6 performs reliably under repeated stress and contact loading, maintaining its shape and mechanical integrity across demanding cycles. Good impact resistance allows PA6 components to absorb shock without cracking — an important property for gears, bushings, and wear blocks that experience intermittent or continuous dynamic loading. Combined with inherent low friction, PA6 often operates in moving assemblies without added lubrication, reducing maintenance requirements.

Modified grades. Ready Plastics extends PA6's performance envelope with two modified variants. PA6 MOLY adds molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) to reduce friction and extend wear life in sliding-contact applications — ideal for bushings and guide components. PA6 OIL incorporates internal lubricants for quieter, smoother operation and further reduced friction in automated and mechanical assemblies.

Selecting the right nylon. PA6 is the strength-and-toughness baseline of the nylon material family at Ready Plastics. For higher strength and heat resistance, step up to PA66. For lower moisture absorption and tighter dimensional stability, consider PA12 or PA612. For the highest mechanical and thermal performance, see PPA.

Frequently Asked Questions

PA6 Rod, answered

What is PA6 material?

PA6 (polyamide 6) is an extruded nylon plastic offering high mechanical strength, impact toughness, abrasion resistance, and good machinability. It is one of the most widely specified engineering thermoplastics for gears, bushings, wear blocks, rollers, and structural components in industrial and mechanical applications.

What is the difference between PA6 and PA66?

PA66 offers higher tensile strength, greater stiffness, and better heat resistance than PA6, making it the preferred choice for more demanding structural and thermal applications. PA6 provides better impact toughness and is available as a cast grade for large load-bearing sections. Both machine well and are stocked by Ready Plastics.

What modified PA6 grades does Ready Plastics offer?

Ready Plastics stocks PA6 MOLY (molybdenum disulfide-filled, for reduced friction and improved wear life) and PA6 OIL (internally lubricated, for quiet, smooth operation). Both are machined from the same PA6 base with targeted additive packages for sliding and tribological applications.

What shapes does Ready Plastics stock in PA6?

Ready Plastics stocks PA6 in sheet and rod. Contact Ready Plastics for current dimensions and availability, or request a cut-to-size quote for your application.

Can PA6 be used in wet environments?

PA6 performs well in dry and moderately humid environments. It does absorb moisture, which can cause slight dimensional changes and softening. For applications requiring tight tolerances in wet or humid conditions, PA12 or PA612 — which have lower moisture absorption — are better suited.
