Material Overview

What is Acetal?

Acetal is an engineering thermoplastic based on polyoxymethylene (POM) — a highly crystalline polymer valued for precision, low friction, and consistent mechanical performance. The acetal family includes two primary grades: POM-C (Acetal Copolymer) and POM-H (Acetal Homopolymer), each available as unfilled or modified variants. Ready Plastics stocks acetal plastic in sheet, rod, and tube form to support prototype and production machining needs.

Acetal combines high stiffness, low moisture absorption, and a naturally low coefficient of friction, making it a reliable choice for moving components that must hold tight tolerances over time. Its excellent wear resistance reduces maintenance intervals in sliding and rotating parts, while its superior machinability allows clean, accurate cuts on standard shop equipment. These properties have made acetal a go-to material for gears, bushings, cams, valve bodies, and fluid-handling components across industrial and automation industries.

Grade selection. The two sub-families reflect different polymerization routes. POM-C (copolymer) is produced by copolymerizing trioxane with a comonomer, yielding improved chemical resistance and thermal stability — the preferred choice for most general-purpose applications. POM-H (homopolymer) offers a higher crystallinity that translates to greater tensile strength, stiffness, and fatigue resistance, making it the preferred choice when maximum mechanical performance is required. Both families are further available in filled and modified grades — including MoS₂-lubricated, PTFE-lubricated, glass-fiber-reinforced, UV-stabilized, static-dissipative, and metal-detectable variants — to address application-specific requirements.

Why choose Ready Plastics for acetal material? Ready Plastics supplies acetal sheet and acetal rod in a broad range of sizes, cut to order for fast turnaround. Whether you need standard POM-C for general machining or a specialty grade like UV-stabilized or glass-filled homopolymer, Ready Plastics provides the inventory depth and material expertise to keep your projects moving. Frequently Asked Questions

Acetal, answered

What is acetal?

Acetal is an engineering thermoplastic made from polyoxymethylene (POM), a highly crystalline polymer. It is valued for its low friction, high stiffness, excellent dimensional stability, and outstanding machinability. Ready Plastics stocks acetal in sheet, rod, and tube form in both copolymer (POM-C) and homopolymer (POM-H) grades.

What is the difference between acetal copolymer (POM-C) and acetal homopolymer (POM-H)?

POM-C (copolymer) is produced by copolymerizing trioxane with a comonomer, which gives it better chemical resistance, improved thermal stability, and a more uniform structure — making it the preferred general-purpose grade. POM-H (homopolymer) has higher crystallinity, resulting in greater tensile strength, stiffness, and fatigue resistance, which makes it the better choice for demanding mechanical applications.

What shapes and sizes does Ready Plastics stock in acetal?

Ready Plastics stocks acetal in sheet, rod, and tube. Sizes vary by grade — see the individual POM-C and POM-H grade pages or contact Ready Plastics for current stock dimensions and cut-to-size options.

Can acetal be machined?

Yes. Acetal is widely regarded as one of the easiest engineering plastics to machine. It cuts cleanly on conventional milling, turning, and drilling equipment, holds tight tolerances, and produces a smooth surface finish without excessive tool wear.

Is acetal the same as Delrin?

Delrin is a registered trade name for a specific acetal homopolymer (POM-H) product. Acetal is the broader material family, which includes both copolymer (POM-C) and homopolymer (POM-H) grades from multiple manufacturers. Ready Plastics supplies acetal under its own line, not under the Delrin trade name.
