Material Overview

What is Acetal Homopolymer?

POM-H (acetal homopolymer, polyoxymethylene homopolymer) is a highly crystalline engineering thermoplastic within the acetal family. Produced by polymerizing formaldehyde into long, uniform chains, POM-H achieves higher crystallinity than POM-C (copolymer) grades, which translates directly into superior mechanical performance. Ready Plastics stocks POM-H acetal in sheet, rod, and tube for demanding precision, automation, and structural applications.

POM-H delivers 7,600 psi tensile strength, 12,000 psi flexural strength, and a flexural modulus of 435,000 psi — making it notably stiffer and stronger than copolymer acetal. Its short-term service temperature reaches 300°F (150°C), with a heat deflection temperature of 285°F (141°C). Very low water absorption (0.05% at 24h / 0.1% at 96h) ensures outstanding dimensional stability in humid environments. These properties make POM-H the material of choice for high-cycle precision components, load-bearing parts, and applications where fatigue resistance is critical.

Modified grades. Ready Plastics extends the POM-H line with specialty variants for application-specific performance. POM-H GF20 adds 20% glass fiber reinforcement to significantly increase stiffness and reduce thermal expansion — the choice for structural components under sustained load. POM-H PTFE incorporates PTFE to reduce friction and extend wear life in high-load sliding assemblies. POM-H UV is UV-stabilized for outdoor and exposed environments where prolonged sunlight exposure would otherwise degrade the base polymer.

POM-H vs POM-C. Choose POM-H when your application requires maximum strength, stiffness, or fatigue endurance — for example, precision gears, high-load bushings, tooling components, and automation parts in demanding cycles. For general-purpose machining, chemical resistance, or applications in wet environments, POM-C (Acetal Copolymer) remains the preferred starting point. Both grades machine excellently on standard CNC equipment and hold tight dimensional tolerances in service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Acetal Homopolymer, answered

What is POM-H acetal?

POM-H (acetal homopolymer) is a highly crystalline engineering thermoplastic in the acetal family. It offers higher tensile strength (7,600 psi), flexural strength (12,000 psi), and fatigue resistance than copolymer grades, with a short-term service temperature of 300°F. Ready Plastics stocks POM-H in sheet, rod, and tube for precision machined applications.

What is the difference between POM-H and POM-C?

POM-H has higher crystallinity than POM-C, giving it greater tensile strength (7,600 psi vs 9,450 psi for copolymer), higher flexural strength, and better fatigue resistance. POM-C offers improved chemical resistance and thermal stability, making it the preferred general-purpose acetal. POM-H is chosen when maximum mechanical performance is the primary requirement.

What shapes and sizes does Ready Plastics stock in POM-H?

Ready Plastics stocks POM-H acetal in sheet, rod, and tube. Sizes vary by grade — see the individual grade pages or contact Ready Plastics for current stock dimensions and cut-to-size availability for both standard and modified POM-H grades.

Is POM-H the same as Delrin?

Delrin is a registered trade name for a specific acetal homopolymer product. POM-H is the generic designation for acetal homopolymer as a material class. Ready Plastics supplies acetal homopolymer under its own line, which shares the same chemical structure as Delrin but is not marketed under that trade name.

Can POM-H be used outdoors?

Standard POM-H will degrade with prolonged UV exposure. For outdoor or sun-exposed applications, Ready Plastics offers POM-H UV, a UV-stabilized homopolymer grade that resists UV-induced degradation and maintains mechanical performance and dimensional stability in exposed environments.
