Material Overview

What is POM-H UV Rod?

POM-H UV is a UV-stabilized acetal homopolymer engineered to maintain mechanical performance and dimensional stability when exposed to prolonged ultraviolet radiation. Standard acetal grades — including unfilled POM-H — are susceptible to surface degradation, discoloration, and loss of mechanical properties when exposed continuously to sunlight. POM-H UV addresses this limitation through a UV stabilizer package incorporated at the formulation stage, enabling reliable long-term performance in outdoor and sun-exposed industrial environments. Ready Plastics stocks POM-H UV sheet for outdoor machinery, infrastructure, and utility applications.

The UV stabilizer system in POM-H UV works by absorbing or quenching the UV energy that would otherwise initiate photodegradation of the polymer backbone. This preserves surface integrity, color stability, mechanical strength, and dimensional accuracy over extended outdoor service life. Applications in exposed industrial enclosures, outdoor conveyor systems, utility infrastructure, and environmental monitoring equipment all benefit from the material's resistance to UV-induced embrittlement and surface chalking.

Mechanical performance. POM-H UV retains the core mechanical benefits of the POM-H base resin: high stiffness, good tensile and flexural strength, excellent fatigue resistance, and very low moisture absorption. It machines cleanly on conventional CNC and manual equipment, holding tight tolerances for precision components. For full property data, consult the datasheet.

Sister grades. For indoor or non-UV-exposed homopolymer acetal applications, see the unfilled POM-H page. For reinforced structural applications, POM-H GF20 adds 20% glass fiber. For high-load friction reduction, POM-H PTFE provides PTFE-based self-lubrication. For UV-stable copolymer acetal, see the POM-C family.

Frequently Asked Questions

POM-H UV Rod, answered

What is POM-H UV?

POM-H UV is a UV-stabilized acetal homopolymer that incorporates a UV stabilizer package to resist photodegradation from prolonged sunlight exposure. It maintains the mechanical strength, stiffness, and dimensional stability of the POM-H base while extending service life in outdoor and sun-exposed applications.

Why does standard acetal need UV stabilization for outdoor use?

Standard acetal (POM) grades are sensitive to ultraviolet radiation, which initiates photodegradation of the polymer backbone. Prolonged outdoor exposure causes surface discoloration, embrittlement, and loss of mechanical properties. The UV stabilizer in POM-H UV absorbs or quenches this energy, preventing degradation and maintaining performance over time.

What is the difference between POM-H UV and standard POM-H?

Standard POM-H offers high mechanical strength, stiffness, and fatigue resistance but degrades under prolonged UV exposure. POM-H UV adds a UV stabilizer system that protects the polymer from photodegradation, making it suitable for outdoor and sun-exposed applications while retaining the core mechanical properties of the homopolymer base.

What applications is POM-H UV suited for?

POM-H UV is used for outdoor machinery components, exposed industrial housings and enclosures, utility and infrastructure parts, conveyor system components in outdoor environments, and any application where acetal is subjected to prolonged sunlight exposure and must maintain its strength and dimensional stability over time.

Can POM-H UV be machined?

Yes. POM-H UV machines similarly to unfilled POM-H on conventional CNC and manual equipment. The UV stabilizer additive does not significantly affect machinability, and the material holds tight tolerances with clean surface finishes.
