Plastic rod stock is the solid cylindrical bar form of engineering plastics and thermoset laminates, produced by rolling, winding, or extruding material into round bars. Rod is the standard starting form for turned parts — bushings, spacers, rollers, standoffs, guide pins, and bearing sleeves — that are produced on lathes, CNC turning centers, and screw machines. Ready Plastics stocks plastic rod across key thermoset laminate grades, providing the raw material for precision-machined insulating components in electrical, industrial, and OEM applications.
The thermoset laminate rod grades cover a wide performance spectrum. G-10 glass-epoxy rod delivers 40,000 psi tensile strength, Rockwell M110 hardness, and under 0.11% moisture absorption for standard electrical insulation and structural applications up to 280°F (140°C). FR-4 glass-epoxy rod adds UL 94 V-0 flame retardancy with 65,000 psi tensile strength — the right choice for turned components in fire-rated electrical equipment. G-11 glass-epoxy rod handles continuous service to 355°F (180°C) when G-10 and FR-4 approach their thermal limits. For the most extreme temperatures, G-7 glass-silicone rod is rated to 425°F (220°C) with excellent arc resistance. CE cotton-phenolic rod provides a balanced, cost-effective option combining electrical insulation, impact resistance, and easy machinability for lower-stress applications.
Selecting the right rod. Start with operating temperature and flame-retardancy requirements. For standard electrical insulation below 280°F, FR-4 rod covers most applications in UL-listed equipment. G-10 rod is appropriate where flame ratings are not required. For elevated temperatures, step up to G-11 or G-7. For cost-effective insulating bushings and spacers, CE phenolic rod is a proven choice.
