UHMW Specifications — Sheet Sizes, Rod Diameters & Tolerances
UHMW polyethylene is available in sheet, rod, tube, and tape forms. Knowing what is stocked in standard dimensions versus what requires a lead time — and what tolerances are realistic — prevents design errors and sourcing surprises. This page covers stocked sizes, standard tolerances, and form-factor selection criteria for UHMW-PE across grades.
At a glance:
- Standard sheet: 4 ft × 8 ft and 4 ft × 10 ft slabs (most thicknesses)
- Thickness range: 1/16" through 4" (thinner and thicker by special order)
- Rod: 1/4" to 12" diameter stocked; larger diameters by special order
- Tube: standard OD/ID combinations from 1" to 8" OD
- Tape: 1/16" and 1/8" thick, self-adhesive or non-adhesive, widths 1/2" to 12"
- Tolerance: thickness ±0.010"–0.030" depending on gauge; rod diameter ±0.010"–0.020" over 2"
Sheet Specifications
Standard Slab Dimensions
UHMW sheet is produced by compression molding or ram extrusion into slabs. The two standard slab formats in North American distribution are:
- 4 ft × 8 ft (48" × 96"): The most widely stocked format across all thicknesses and grades
- 4 ft × 10 ft (48" × 120"): Standard for thinner gauges (1/8"–1"); stocked in fewer grades
Custom slab sizes — 5×10 ft, 5×12 ft, 6×12 ft — are available from primary compounders for large-volume orders. Lead times are typically 4–8 weeks.
Thickness Range
| Thickness | Notes |
|---|---|
| 1/16" (0.0625") | Thin film/gasket applications; typically ram-extruded |
| 1/8" (0.125") | Wear strip overlay; thin chute facing |
| 3/16" (0.1875") | Light liner; snap-in guide channel |
| 1/4" (0.250") | Most common light-duty wear and guide rail thickness |
| 3/8" (0.375") | Conveyor wear strip medium |
| 1/2" (0.500") | Most common general-purpose liner and guide rail |
| 3/4" (0.750") | Standard food-zone insert and chute liner |
| 1" (1.000") | Moderate-impact liner; marine panel |
| 1-1/4" to 1-1/2" | Heavy chute liner; moderate aggregate |
| 2" (2.000") | High-impact chute liner; ice rink dasher |
| 2-1/2" to 3" | Primary crusher zone liner; heavy marine fender |
| 4" (4.000") | Maximum common stocked thickness; structural marine |
Thicknesses between 3/4" and 2" in 1/4" increments are the most reliably stocked across all grades. Thicknesses above 2" may be cut from larger compression-molded billets and carry longer lead times.
Sheet Thickness Tolerances
UHMW sheet is not dimensionally equivalent to machined plate. If your design requires tighter thickness tolerances, specify that the sheet be face-machined after purchase. This is common for precision liner applications where uniform thickness affects clearance or load distribution.
Flatness and Bow
Ram-extruded UHMW sheet has residual internal stress that can cause bow, particularly in thinner gauges. A typical flatness specification is 1/8" maximum bow per 48" of length. Sheets stored vertically without support can develop bow over time. Store horizontally on flat pallets. If flatness is critical, specify compression-molded slab rather than ram-extruded sheet; compression-molded is generally flatter but available in fewer grades.
Rod Specifications
UHMW rod is produced by ram extrusion. It is the starting point for machined parts: bushings, rollers, guide blocks, wear pads, and custom components.
Standard Diameters
| Diameter Range | Stock Status |
|---|---|
| 1/4" to 1" | Widely stocked in 1/8" increments |
| 1-1/4" to 2" | Widely stocked in 1/4" increments |
| 2-1/2" to 4" | Stocked; fewer grade/color options |
| 4-1/2" to 6" | Standard stock; longer lead times on colored grades |
| 6-1/2" to 8" | Limited stock; confirm availability |
| 8-1/2" to 12" | Special order in most cases; 2–4 week lead |
Standard rod length is 10 ft. Some distributors stock 6 ft and 5 ft lengths for smaller-diameter rods.
Rod Diameter Tolerances
Rod is supplied undersized (negative tolerance). For machined bushings or bearings requiring a specific finished diameter, allow at least 0.030"–0.060" of stock removal. UHMW rod is difficult to turn to a precise final OD in a single cut because the material springs back slightly after the tool passes. Taking a light finish cut (0.005"–0.010" depth of cut) at high speed produces the best result. The machining guide covers turning specifics.
Tube Specifications
UHMW tube is ram-extruded with a specific OD and ID. Not all size combinations are standard stock — tube availability is more limited than sheet or rod.
Common Tube Sizes (OD × ID)
| OD | Wall Thickness | ID (approximate) |
|---|---|---|
| 1-1/2" | 1/4" | 1" |
| 2" | 1/4" | 1-1/2" |
| 2" | 3/8" | 1-1/4" |
| 3" | 3/8" | 2-1/4" |
| 3" | 1/2" | 2" |
| 4" | 1/2" | 3" |
| 6" | 3/4" | 4-1/2" |
| 8" | 1" | 6" |
For large-diameter or non-standard wall thickness tube, it is usually more cost-effective to bore a rod blank on a lathe. See UHMW machining for boring and ID machining notes.
Tape Specifications
UHMW tape is thin-gauge sheet (typically 1/16" or 1/8" thick) with a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) backing. It is used for quick-install wear strip overlays, slide surfaces, and low-load guide rails where fasteners are not practical.
| Thickness | Width Range | Adhesive | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/16" (0.0625") | 1/2" to 12" | PSA (acrylic) | Light-duty wear overlay |
| 1/8" (0.125") | 1" to 12" | PSA (acrylic) | Medium-duty; boat rubstrake |
| 1/16" | Up to 48" | No adhesive | Cut-to-width from sheet |
UHMW tape with PSA backing has a service temperature limit set by the adhesive (typically 200°F / 93°C), not the UHMW base. Adhesive bond strength depends on surface preparation — degrease thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol; abrade if possible.
