PVC Sheet & Rod Specifications — Sizes, Tolerances, and Standards

PVC plastic sheet and rod are manufactured to ASTM D1784 material specifications and distributed in standard formats that align with fabricated part design conventions. Type 1 PVC sheet ships in 4×8 and 4×10 ft panels; rod follows Schedule 80 diameter increments from 1/4" through 6". This page documents stock sizes, thickness tolerances, applicable standards, and the dimensional data fabricators and engineers need to design parts and estimate material yields.

At a glance:

  • Sheet: 4×8 ft and 4×10 ft; thicknesses 1/16" through 1-1/2"
  • Rod: Schedule 80 diameters 1/4" through 6"; lengths 5 ft and 10 ft standard
  • Material standard: ASTM D1784; Type 1 = cell class 12454, Type 2 = 14333
  • CPVC sheet less commonly stocked — confirm availability for non-standard thicknesses
  • Expanded PVC (Sintra, Komatex) in metric thicknesses 1mm–12mm; 4×8 and 4×10 standard
  • Thickness tolerances run ±5–10% for extruded sheet; rod OD tolerance ±0.010"–±0.025"

Applicable Standards

StandardScope
ASTM D1784Rigid PVC compounds — cell classification and mechanical requirements
ASTM D4396PVC extruded sheet (thickness, width, flatness tolerances)
ASTM D1600Standard terminology for PVC and CPVC
NSF 61Drinking water system components (specific listed products only)
UL 94Flammability classification — rigid PVC is inherently V-0
ASTM F441CPVC plastic pipe, Schedule 80

Material certification to ASTM D1784 Cell 12454 (Type 1) or Cell 14333 (Type 2) should be requested for chemical process applications. Ask suppliers for a certificate of conformance (CoC) referencing the cell class on critical applications.

Sheet Specifications

Type 1 and Type 2 PVC Sheet

Standard sheet format is 4 ft × 8 ft (48" × 96") and 4 ft × 10 ft (48" × 120"). Some distributors also stock 4 ft × 4 ft cut-down panels for smaller quantity needs. Custom cut-to-size is available from most distributors operating a vertical saw or panel saw.

Weights calculated at nominal density of 1.40 g/cc; actual weights vary ±5% with thickness tolerance.

Thickness Tolerance

Extruded PVC sheet conforms to ASTM D4396. Typical thickness tolerance by nominal thickness:

Nominal ThicknessTolerance
1/16"–3/16"±0.010" (±10%)
1/4"–1/2"±0.015" (±5–6%)
3/4"–1"±0.020" (±2–3%)
1-1/4"–1-1/2"±0.025" (±2%)

For close-tolerance applications (machined parts with face-to-face mating surfaces), face-mill or surface-grind the stock sheet to achieve tighter thickness control. PVC machines predictably; a face pass removes 0.010"–0.020" per pass without stress-relief warping issues typical in acetal or nylon.

Surface Condition and Flatness

Type 1 PVC sheet is extruded with both surfaces smooth and equivalent. No distinct "good side" designation applies. Flatness conformance is specified in ASTM D4396 as maximum bow of 0.5% of the diagonal dimension. A 4×8 sheet has a diagonal of ~115 in; maximum bow is therefore 0.575" — acceptable for most fabrication. Flatter sheet (for precision bonded laminations) should be specified or screened from stock.

Type 2 PVCGray, White

Rod Specifications

Type 1 PVC Rod — Schedule 80 Diameters

PVC rod is produced in diameters corresponding to Schedule 80 pipe OD series and additional intermediate sizes. Standard lengths are 5 ft and 10 ft. Longer random lengths (up to 20 ft) are available from some extruders by special order.

Rod OD Tolerance

PVC rod OD tolerance follows ASTM D1784 supplemented by extrusion practice:

Nominal DiameterOD Tolerance
1/4"–1"±0.010"
1-1/4"–2"±0.015"
2-1/2"–4"±0.020"
6"±0.025"

For lathe turning operations, these tolerances are adequate as starting stock — finished OD is set by the machining operation, not the raw rod. When ordering stock for close-tolerance turned parts, add at least 0.060" to finished OD to allow cleanup cuts and surface conditioning.

CPVC Sheet and Rod Specifications

CPVC is stocked in a more limited range than Type 1 PVC. Commonly available thicknesses are:

CPVC Sheet: 1/8", 3/16", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4", 1" in 4×8 and 4×10 ft (availability varies by distributor). Unusual thicknesses (1-1/4", 1-1/2") typically require special order.

CPVC Rod: 1/4" through 4" in 5 ft and 10 ft lengths. 6" diameter CPVC rod is available from specialty suppliers.

CPVC is 10–15% heavier than equivalent Type 1 PVC (density 1.52–1.58 g/cc). For weight-critical applications, factor this into material estimates. Refer to the CPVC grade detail for property differences.

Expanded PVC Sheet Specifications

Expanded PVC (Sintra, Komatex) follows metric thickness designations common in the European sign industry:

ThicknessCommon Uses
1mmLightweight backers, packaging inserts
2mmThin signs, labels
3mmStandard indoor signage, display
4mmPoint-of-purchase, exhibit panels
6mmHeavier display, dimensional lettering backer
10mmStructural sign panels, furniture applications
12mmThickest standard; used for dimensional elements

Sheet formats: 4×8 ft (standard), 4×10 ft; some distributors offer 5×10 ft jumbo sheets for large-format printing operations. Colors: white (standard), black, and pre-colored (blue, red, yellow, green) from select suppliers.

Expanded PVC sheet is not dimensionally interchangeable with solid PVC sheet in structural or chemical service applications. Core density varies between brands and batches; the foam structure cannot carry the same loads as solid sheet of equivalent nominal thickness.

Cut-to-Size and Custom Processing

Most plastic distributors, including Federal Material, offer:

  • Saw cutting to customer-specified sheet dimensions (straight cuts)
  • Panel saw cutting for precision blanks
  • Length cutting of rod to finished length before shipping

Tolerances on cut-to-size sheet: ±1/16" for panel saw cuts; ±1/8" for band saw or circular saw cuts. If tighter blank tolerances are needed, machine to final dimension from cut-to-size stock.
