PPS Ryton Specifications — Sheet & Rod Sizes

PPS Ryton sheet and rod is stocked in natural (tan) color in a range of standard sizes suitable for machined pump components, valve seats, semiconductor fixtures, and electrical insulators. This page covers stock dimensions, thickness and diameter tolerances, standard lengths, applicable material standards, and guidance for specifying PPS correctly on a purchase order or engineering drawing.

At a glance:

  • Sheet: 12" × 24" through 24" × 48", thicknesses from ¼" to 2"
  • Rod: diameters ¼" through 6", standard 4-foot lengths
  • Color: natural (tan) for all stock; black not standard for PPS
  • All stock is natural (unfilled) or GF-33 — specify grade at order
  • ASTM D5204 is the relevant standard for PPS shapes
  • Cut-to-size available on standard orders

Sheet Specifications

Standard Sheet Sizes

PPS sheet is available in the following standard blank sizes. All thicknesses listed are nominal; see tolerance table below.

Sheet Blank SizeThicknesses Available
12" × 24"¼", 3/8", ½", ¾", 1", 1½", 2"
12" × 48"¼", 3/8", ½", ¾", 1", 1½", 2"
24" × 24"¼", 3/8", ½", ¾", 1", 1½", 2"
24" × 48"¼", 3/8", ½", ¾", 1", 1½", 2"

Larger blanks (36" × 48" and custom) are available to order — lead times apply. Standard stock is natural (tan) unfilled PPS or 33% glass-filled PPS; Techtron PPS is primarily available in rod form due to bearing-grade sheet stock availability.

Sheet Thickness Tolerances

Tolerances follow ASTM D5204 and typical extruder/compressor plate tolerances for PPS:

Nominal ThicknessThickness Tolerance
¼" (0.250")±0.015"
3/8" (0.375")±0.018"
½" (0.500")±0.020"
¾" (0.750")±0.025"
1" (1.000")±0.030"
1½" (1.500")±0.035"
2" (2.000")±0.040"

Sheet flatness is a function of extrusion and compression molding process variability. Thinner sheets (¼"–½") may exhibit slight bow or warp in large blanks. Skim cuts may be required to achieve flatness on machined face surfaces — factor in 0.030"–0.060" of stock removal per face when calculating blank thickness requirements.

Surface Condition

PPS sheet is supplied with as-cut or as-compression-molded surfaces. Surface texture on molded plate is typically 125–250 µin Ra as-supplied. Machined surfaces achieve 32–63 µin Ra with standard carbide tooling and appropriate feed rates. See the PPS machining guide for surface finish recommendations.

Rod Diameter Tolerances

Nominal DiameterDiameter Tolerance
¼"–1"+0.030" / -0.000"
1"–2"+0.040" / -0.000"
2"–4"+0.060" / -0.000"
4"–6"+0.080" / -0.000"

Rod tolerances are positive-only (over-nominal) to ensure sufficient material for finish-machining. All rods are compression-molded or extruded solid; hollow bore is not standard but can be machined.

Concentricity and Straightness

Compression-molded rod is supplied with a maximum TIR (total indicated runout) of 0.010" per foot of length. Straightness is typically within 0.060" per 4-foot stick. For tight-tolerance turning operations, verify straightness at receipt and support the rod appropriately at the chuck and tailstock to avoid deflection error.

Material Standards

ASTM D5204

ASTM D5204 is the ASTM standard covering polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) injection-molding and extrusion materials. It defines material classification, property requirements, and test methods. Extruded and compression-molded PPS shapes (sheet, rod) are specified to conform to this standard for base resin composition and minimum property levels.

Property requirements under ASTM D5204 for unfilled PPS align with the values listed in the properties page:

ASTM D5204 PropertyMinimum Value
Tensile Strength11,000 psi
Flexural Modulus550,000 psi
Heat Deflection Temp (264 psi)475°F
FlammabilityUL 94 V-0

ASTM D638, D790, D256

Mechanical properties referenced on PPS data sheets (tensile, flexural, impact) are tested under ASTM D638 (tensile), D790 (flexural), and D256 (Izod impact) respectively. Specify these test methods when requesting material certifications for procurement.

UL 94 V-0

All stock PPS grades — unfilled Ryton, Techtron, and GF-33 — are rated UL 94 V-0 inherently. No additive flame retardant is required. The rating is confirmed under UL 94 burn test conditions using specimens cut from stock shapes. Certificates of compliance are available on request.

Cut-to-Size Ordering

Federal Materials cuts sheet and rod to customer dimensions. Specify:

  1. Grade: Ryton (unfilled), Techtron PPS, or PPS 33% GF
  2. Form: Sheet or rod
  3. Stock size: Blank size (sheet) or diameter (rod)
  4. Cut dimensions: Final cut width × length (sheet) or cut length (rod)
  5. Quantity: Number of pieces

Standard cut tolerances: ±1/16" on sheet cuts; ±1/8" on rod cuts. Precision cut (±1/32") available on request — note that precision-cut parts are not finish-machined; tolerance reflects saw cut variation only.

Certification and Documentation

Material Certifications

Federal Materials provides material certifications (certs) on request with each order. A standard PPS cert includes:

  • Material identification: PPS polyphenylene sulfide, grade designation (Ryton, Techtron, GF-33)
  • Lot number and supplier of origin
  • Compliance statement to ASTM D5204 (where applicable)
  • UL 94 V-0 flame rating confirmation
  • FDA 21 CFR 177.2490 compliance statement (for natural unfilled grades)

Certifications are provided as PDF documents with the order. For regulated industries (semiconductor, food processing, pharmaceutical), request certs at the time of order placement.

RoHS and REACH

Unfilled natural PPS does not contain substances of very high concern (SVHC) listed under REACH Annex XIV or XVII at concentrations above reporting thresholds. PPS complies with EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU. Supplier-specific REACH and RoHS declarations are available on request.

Glass-filled grades (GF-33) comply with RoHS and REACH for the polymer matrix; verify glass fiber sizing agent declarations with the specific supplier if ultra-strict SVHC compliance documentation is required for regulated applications.

Comparison to PEEK and Torlon Stock Sizes

PPS rod is available in larger diameters than most PEEK and Torlon PAI stock, making it practical for large-diameter pump impellers, valve bodies, and manifold blocks that would be cost-prohibitive in PEEK. The maximum rod diameter of 6" in PPS is matched or exceeded by few high-performance thermoplastics.

For the full material comparison including when to substitute PEEK, Torlon, or nylon for PPS, see the PPS comparisons index.
