Polypropylene Specifications: ASTM Standards, Sizes & Tolerances

Polypropylene (PP) stock shapes are produced to ASTM D4101 (the primary governing standard for PP plastic sheet, rod, and tube in industrial use) and to various international equivalents for export applications. This page details the governing standards, standard stock sizes, thickness and diameter tolerances, available colors, and ordering specifications for sheet, rod, and tube in all major PP grades.

At a Glance

  • Governing standard: ASTM D4101 — covers PP and propylene copolymer plastics for industrial shapes
  • Sheet: 4×8 ft and 4×10 ft standard panels; 0.060 in to 4.0 in thick
  • Rod: 0.250 in to 8.0 in diameter; 6-ft and 12-ft standard lengths
  • Tube: 0.25 in to 12 in OD; standard schedule and custom wall thicknesses
  • Colors: natural (off-white), black, white, gray — grade dependent
  • Tolerances: per ASTM D4101 for thickness and diameter; closer tolerances available on special order

Governing Standards

ASTM D4101

ASTM D4101, Standard Specification for Polypropylene Injection and Extrusion Materials, classifies PP resins by type, class, and grade based on melt flow rate, heat deflection temperature, and physical properties. For stock shape purposes, D4101 is the reference standard for property verification and material certification.

Related ASTM Standards

  • ASTM D638 — Tensile properties (standard test for PP mechanical data)
  • ASTM D790 — Flexural properties
  • ASTM D256 — Izod impact strength
  • ASTM D648 — Heat deflection temperature under load
  • ASTM D570 — Water absorption
  • ASTM D792 — Density by displacement

International Equivalents

  • ISO 1873 — Polypropylene moulding and extrusion materials (international equivalent to ASTM D4101)
  • DIN EN ISO 15494 — Thermoplastics pipes and fittings for industrial applications (includes PP-H, PP-B, PP-R designations)

UL Standards

  • UL94 — Flammability of plastic materials (HB rating for natural PP; V-0 for PP-FR grades)
  • UL 746A — Polymeric materials — short-term property evaluations (referenced for electrical applications)

FDA References

  • 21 CFR 177.1520 — Olefin polymers; applicable to natural and white PP grades for food contact

Sheet Thickness Tolerances

Thickness tolerances per ASTM D4101 and industry standard practice:

Nominal Thickness (in)Standard Tolerance (±in)
0.060–0.125±0.010
0.125–0.250±0.015
