PETG Specifications — Sheet Sizes, Tolerances & Standards

PETG sheet, rod, and tube stock dimensions follow manufacturer published tolerance tables and, for sheet, often align with flat sheet optical tolerances. Unlike engineering plastics governed by ASTM standards (e.g., ASTM D6262 for PEEK), PETG sheet is primarily governed by producer specifications and industry practice for display and fabrication applications.

At a glance:

  • Standard sheet: 48" × 96" (4'×8') primary size; 24"×48" and 36"×48" available
  • Thickness range: 0.030" to 0.500" (and up to 1.0" for select applications)
  • Thickness tolerance: ±0.005" to ±0.015" depending on gauge
  • Rod: 0.250"–6.0" diameter; tube: OD/ID combinations to order
  • FDA 21 CFR 177.1630; RoHS compliant; no specific ASTM standard for PETG display sheet

Sheet Size and Tolerance Standards

Standard Sheet Sizes

PETG sheet is primarily produced in the display and sign industry format:

Standard Sheet SizeCommon Availability
48" × 96" (4′ × 8′)Stock — most gauges
48" × 120" (4′ × 10′)Available from select suppliers
36" × 48"Stock in some gauges
24" × 48"Available; cut from larger sheets

Sheets are extruded to width and cut to length. Actual dimensions may vary ±0.125" on width and length from nominal.

Thickness Range and Tolerances

Nominal ThicknessTypical Tolerance
0.030"±0.003"
0.060"±0.005"
0.093"±0.005"
0.125"±0.007"
0.187"±0.007"
0.250"±0.010"
0.375"±0.012"
0.500"±0.015"

Tolerances are for as-extruded sheet. Precision-thickness requirements can be achieved by surface grinding, though this is uncommon for PETG.

Flatness

Flatness of PETG sheet varies by thickness:

  • Thin gauges (≤0.125") may exhibit slight bow — typically within 0.020" per foot
  • Thicker gauges (≥0.250") are generally flat to within 0.010" per foot

For thermoforming applications, flatness of incoming sheet is critical to even heating — warped sheet can cause uneven temperature distribution and forming defects.

Rod Specifications

PETG rod (clear) is available as a standard stock item in common diameters:

Diameter RangeOD ToleranceLength
0.250" – 0.750"±0.010"4 ft
0.750" – 1.5"±0.015"4 ft
1.5" – 3.0"±0.020"4 ft
3.0" – 6.0"±0.030"4 ft

PETG rod is less widely stocked than sheet — confirm specific diameters with FedMat before specifying.

Applicable Standards and Testing

PETG sheet and rod are tested to standard ASTM methods for reporting properties:

PropertyTest Method
Tensile strength, modulus, elongationASTM D638
Flexural strength and modulusASTM D790
Izod impact, notchedASTM D256
Heat deflection temperatureASTM D648
Light transmission and hazeASTM D1003
DensityASTM D792
Water absorptionASTM D570
Flammability (HB)ASTM D635 or UL 94 HB

There is no single ASTM product standard governing PETG display and fabrication sheet equivalent to ASTM D6262 (PEEK) or D7292 (PET-P). Properties are confirmed per producer data sheets and lot testing.

Regulatory and Environmental

Engineering Drawing Notation

Suggested material callout for PETG on engineering drawings:

  • Material: "PETG, amorphous copolyester per Eastman PETG specifications or equivalent; clear natural color"
  • For food contact: add "FDA 21 CFR 177.1630 compliance required; COC required per lot"
  • Tolerances: machined features hold ±0.003" (turned) to ±0.005" (milled) without difficulty on PETG
