HDPE Grades — Standard, Marine Starboard & Borated
HDPE grades divide into four main categories: standard (general-purpose), Marine HDPE (Starboard and related trade names), borated for radiation shielding, and color-coded for food-processing traceability. Each grade starts with the same base polyethylene resin but adds specific compounds—UV stabilizers, boron-bearing minerals, or food-safe pigments—that create meaningfully different performance profiles. Choosing the wrong grade is one of the most common errors in HDPE specification; this guide defines each grade, compares their properties, and identifies the correct application for each.

Standard HDPE
Standard HDPE sheet and rod is produced from high-density polyethylene resin meeting ASTM D4976. Available in natural (translucent white), black, and white, it provides the baseline mechanical and chemical properties of the material:
- Tensile strength: 4,600 psi
- Flexural modulus: 200,000 psi
- Continuous use temperature: 180°F
- Water absorption: <0.1%
- FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 compliant (when compounded with food-safe additives)
Standard HDPE is the correct choice for most indoor industrial applications: cutting boards, tank panels, bin liners, machine guards, and food-contact surfaces. It is not UV-stabilized and will chalk and embrittle under prolonged outdoor sun exposure.
Black HDPE has better outdoor durability than natural or white grades because carbon black provides some UV absorption. However, it is still not equivalent to UV-stabilized Marine HDPE. For any outdoor structural application, specify Marine HDPE.
Marine HDPE — Starboard, Seaboard, KING StarBoard
Marine HDPE is the dominant UV-stabilized HDPE grade for outdoor, marine, and exterior architectural applications. Several manufacturers produce marine-grade HDPE sheet under proprietary trade names:

- Starboard — King Plastic Corporation's original marine HDPE brand; the most widely recognized trade name in the market
- Seaboard — Marine HDPE targeted at sign and display fabricators; slightly different color palette
- KING StarBoard — King Plastic Corporation's expanded product line, including KING StarBoard ST (texture), KING StarBoard AS (anti-slip), and KING StarBoard XL (larger sheet format)
What Makes Marine HDPE Different
Marine HDPE incorporates UV absorbers (typically benzotriazoles or benzophenones) and hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) compounded uniformly into the resin. Unlike painted surfaces, this UV protection extends through the full sheet thickness and is not removed by machining, sanding, or routing. Accelerated weathering to ASTM G154 (UV-A 340) and ASTM G155 (xenon arc) shows Marine HDPE retaining >80% of baseline tensile properties after exposures equivalent to 5+ years of Florida outdoor weathering.

Marine HDPE is available in an extended palette compared to standard grade:

Marine HDPE Properties vs. Standard
The slight tensile reduction in marine grades is a consequence of the UV additive and colorant loading. For structural calculations on outdoor assemblies, use 4,000 psi as the conservative tensile figure.
Borated HDPE
Purpose and Mechanism
Borated HDPE contains boron compounds—most commonly boron carbide (B₄C), boric acid, or colemanite—dispersed uniformly throughout the HDPE matrix. Boron-10, which makes up approximately 20% of natural boron, has a very high thermal neutron absorption cross-section (3,840 barns). When thermal neutrons enter the sheet, they are captured by the boron atoms, converting the neutron into an alpha particle and a lithium nucleus rather than allowing transmission.
This mechanism is distinct from gamma shielding (which requires high-density materials like lead or concrete); borated HDPE is a neutron shield specifically, not a general radiation shield. For mixed gamma + neutron radiation environments, borated HDPE is typically used in conjunction with lead or steel shielding.
Boron Loading Options

Higher boron loading reduces tensile strength and impact resistance. At 30% boron carbide loading, tensile strength may fall to 3,000–3,500 psi. Consult the manufacturer's datasheet for the specific loading specified.
Fabrication Notes
Borated HDPE machines and welds the same as standard HDPE: carbide tooling, hot-air or extrusion welding with borated HDPE rod filler. Machine chips and dust should be handled per applicable regulations for boron compounds.
Color-Coded HDPE for Food Processing
Color-coded HDPE cutting boards and food-contact surfaces are a HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) best practice for food-manufacturing and food-service operations. The color coding creates a visual system for preventing cross-contamination between different food types or allergen zones.

Color-coded HDPE uses the same FDA 21 CFR 177.1520-compliant base resin as natural HDPE; only food-safe pigments are used. The pigments do not compromise FDA status. NSF/ANSI 51 certification is available on selected color grades.
