Canvas Phenolic Sheet

Canvas phenolic sheet is the highest-impact-strength flat laminate in the fabric phenolic family — the heavy canvas weave delivers Izod impact values 50–100% above cotton phenolic sheet, making it the preferred choice for wear liners, structural insulating plates, chute liners, and industrial fixture bases in high-shock environments.

Properties Relevant to Sheet Form

The defining differentiator of canvas phenolic sheet over cotton and linen phenolic is impact resistance. The heavier weave distributes sudden transverse loads across more fiber strands, resisting crack propagation through the sheet thickness.

The compressive strength of canvas phenolic exceeds cotton phenolic modestly; the impact advantage is clear. Where flatness and surface smoothness matter more than impact tolerance, cotton or linen phenolic sheet is preferable — canvas phenolic's coarser weave produces a rougher surface that is visible and tactile.

Typical Applications — Sheet Form

Canvas phenolic sheet is specified wherever flat phenolic stock will see shock loading, drop impacts, or repeated dynamic forces that would crack finer-weave grades:

Heavy industrial wear liners — Canvas phenolic sheet bonded or mechanically fastened to chute walls, conveyor transfer points, and hopper liners in mining, quarrying, and aggregate handling. The higher impact resistance extends liner life at transfer points where large lumps of material impact the liner face.

Structural insulating plates under dynamic load — Electrical isolation pads in motor mounts, machine isolation plates, and under-rail insulating pads where the sheet must absorb vibration and shock while maintaining electrical isolation.

Heavy jig plates and fixture bases — 1" to 4" canvas phenolic sheet machined as fixture body stock for large-part machining operations where heavy clamping forces or interrupted cuts are involved. The higher impact strength reduces risk of fixture plate fracture under clamp-induced shock.

Outdoor electrical switchgear panels — Weathered switchgear bases and outdoor terminal boards where rain-splash impact and thermal cycling create cyclic stress in the panel face.

Shim stock and packing plates — Thick canvas phenolic sheet used as packing shims under heavy press frames, forging hammer anvils, and die-cushion plates where crush resistance and impact absorption are primary requirements.

Marine and offshore structural insulators — Insulating blocking plates in ship hull penetrations, offshore platform electrical isolation pads, and marine motor mounts where salt spray corrosion immunity and impact tolerance are both required.

Machining Notes — Sheet

Canvas phenolic sheet machines similarly to cotton phenolic with a few adjustments for the heavier weave:

Sawing: Carbide-tipped blade, 60–80 tooth. Feed at a moderate, controlled rate — the heavy canvas weave can grab a saw blade more aggressively than cotton phenolic if the feed is too fast or the blade is dull. Maintain blade sharpness.

Milling and routing: Solid-carbide or carbide-insert tooling. Climb milling at the final pass for edge quality. Depth of cut: up to 0.060" per pass for routing. Canvas phenolic edge cut quality is coarser than cotton or linen phenolic — a final deburring pass improves edge appearance.

Drilling: Sharp carbide drill at 300–500 SFM. Use a backer board at the exit face — canvas phenolic tends to blow out at the exit if the drill is dull or feed is too fast. The larger canvas fiber can produce a rougher hole wall than cotton phenolic; if a smooth hole is required, ream after drilling.

Punching: Canvas phenolic sheet (1/8" and under) can be punched with sharp steel dies. Thicker gauges punch less cleanly than cotton phenolic due to the heavier fabric matrix — expect more edge roughness on punched holes and perimeters.

Grinding: Aluminum-oxide or silicon-carbide wheel, dry grinding with dust extraction. Canvas phenolic grinds more aggressively than cotton phenolic — monitor wheel loading.

Dust control: NIOSH P100 respirator; localized exhaust ventilation; combustible dust precautions. Same hazard profile as cotton and linen phenolic.
