ABS Plastic Sheet & Rod Specifications — Sizes & Tolerances
ABS plastic sheet and rod are manufactured to ASTM and industry standard dimensional tolerances. Sheet is stocked in standard 4×8 ft and 5×10 ft sizes, with thicknesses from 0.030 in (gauge stock for thermoforming) through 1.0 in (heavy plate for machined blocks and fixtures). Rod diameter ranges from 1/4 in through 4 in. This page covers the complete dimensional specifications, tolerance tables, surface finish standards, and ordering notes for ABS sheet and rod.

ABS Sheet — Standard Sizes
Nominal Sheet Dimensions
ABS sheet is produced in two standard sizes that match the most common CNC router table and thermoforming press dimensions:
| Sheet Size | Width | Length | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4×8 ft | 48 in | 96 in | Standard — widest availability, all grades |
| 5×10 ft | 60 in | 120 in | Large format — primarily GP ABS, fewer FR options |
| Custom | Per order | Per order | CNC cut-to-size from standard sheet |
Sheet edges are saw-cut (not polished). Actual sheet dimensions may be 0–0.25 in over nominal on length and width; never under. This is standard practice for thermoplastic sheet to prevent under-delivery.
Thickness Range and Gauge Equivalents
ABS sheet spans a wide thickness range to accommodate both thin thermoforming stock and heavy machined plate. Gauge numbers (for thinner stock, derived from the steel gauge system) are sometimes referenced by thermoformers — the decimal equivalents are the controlling dimension.
| Nominal Thickness | Decimal (in) | Approximate mm | Common Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.030 in | 0.030 | 0.76 | Thin vacuum-form stock, blister pack |
| 0.060 in | 0.060 | 1.52 | Light enclosure panel, formed interior parts |
| 0.080 in | 0.080 | 2.03 | Thermoformed automotive panel stock |
| 0.093 in (3/32) | 0.093 | 2.36 | Standard enclosure wall thickness |
| 0.125 in (1/8) | 0.125 | 3.18 | General enclosure, panel, cover |
| 0.187 in (3/16) | 0.187 | 4.76 | Structural panel, heavy enclosure |
| 0.250 in (1/4) | 0.250 | 6.35 | Thick panel, machined components |
| 0.375 in (3/8) | 0.375 | 9.53 | Plate stock for machined parts |
| 0.500 in (1/2) | 0.500 | 12.70 | Heavy plate |
| 0.750 in (3/4) | 0.750 | 19.05 | Machined block stock |
| 1.000 in (1") | 1.000 | 25.40 | Thick plate — maximum standard stock |
Not all thicknesses are available in all grades. ABS-FR and FR2 typically cover 0.062 in through 0.500 in. Royalite focuses on 0.060 in through 0.250 in. GP ABS has the fullest thickness range from 0.030 in to 1.0 in. Confirm availability before specifying non-standard combinations.
ABS Sheet — Thickness Tolerances
ASTM D4673 governs ABS plastic materials. Thickness tolerances for extruded thermoplastic sheet follow ASTM D5468 (for general-purpose sheet) and manufacturer-specific tables. The practical working tolerance for most ABS sheet:
| Nominal Thickness | Tolerance |
|---|---|
| 0.030–0.060 in | ±0.005 in (±8–17%) |
| 0.062–0.125 in | ±0.010 in (±8–16%) |
| 0.125–0.250 in | ±0.015 in (±6–12%) |
| 0.250–0.500 in | ±0.020 in (±4–8%) |
| 0.500–1.000 in | ±0.030 in (±3–6%) |
Width and length tolerances on sawn sheet: +0.25 in / –0.000 in (never under on length or width).
For precision machined parts: The nominal thickness tolerance of ±0.010–0.030 in is usually acceptable as starting stock; final dimensions are held by the machining operation, not the incoming sheet tolerance. For applications where sheet thickness itself is a critical dimension (gaskets, spacers), discuss closer-tolerance press-polished sheet with your distributor.
ABS Rod — Standard Diameters
ABS rod is extruded and available in round cross-section. It is used primarily for turning on a lathe to produce knobs, standoffs, bushings, spacers, and small machined components where round starting stock reduces setup time vs. machining from flat plate.
| Nominal Diameter | Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1/4 in | 0.250 in | Smallest standard diameter |
| 3/8 in | 0.375 in | — |
| 1/2 in | 0.500 in | — |
| 3/4 in | 0.750 in | — |
| 1 in | 1.000 in | Most common turned-part stock |
| 1-1/4 in | 1.250 in | — |
| 1-1/2 in | 1.500 in | — |
| 2 in | 2.000 in | — |
| 2-1/2 in | 2.500 in | — |
| 3 in | 3.000 in | — |
| 4 in | 4.000 in | Maximum standard diameter |
Rod length: standard 6-ft lengths (72 in). Cut lengths available.
Rod diameter tolerance: typically +0.000 / –0.020 in for diameters under 2 in; +0.000 / –0.030 in for larger diameters. Confirm with supplier for precision turning applications.
Surface Finish and Appearance
Sheet Surface
ABS sheet is extruded between polished chrome rolls on one or both sides, producing a smooth, semi-gloss surface on standard GP ABS. Surface quality grades:
- One-side smooth (1S): One smooth extruded surface, one matte or textured opposite side — most common for thermoforming where only the formed (tool-side) face is visible
- Two-side smooth (2S): Both sides extruded against polished rolls — specified for enclosure panels where both faces are visible
- Royalite textured: Fine-grain matte texture extruded in — eliminates need for painting in trim applications
Surface roughness: smooth ABS sheet typically 0.5–2.0 µm Ra (20–80 µin Ra). Textured Royalite varies by pattern specification.
Color and Opacity
Standard ABS sheet colors:
- Natural: Off-white to beige; exact shade varies by manufacturer and lot
- Black: Full-opacity black; most consistent across lots
- White: Opaque white; some translucency possible at thicknesses below 0.060 in in some formulations
- Custom: Available in many hues with minimum order quantities (typically 500–2,000 lb); confirm with supplier
ABS is an opaque material — it does not transmit visible light in standard formulations regardless of color. For transparent or translucent applications, see polycarbonate or acrylic sheet.

Ordering Notes
- Cut-to-size: Standard sheet can be cut to custom dimensions. Minimum cut charge may apply for small pieces. CNC routing available for complex profiles.
- Minimum order: Full sheets or half-sheets typically available without quantity minimums. Cut pieces depend on stock availability.
- Lead time: GP ABS in standard thicknesses ships from stock. ABS-FR and Royalite in non-standard thicknesses may require 1–3 week lead time.
- Flatness: ABS sheet may exhibit minor bow (camber) — typically less than 0.125 in over 48 in span. For precision flat surfaces, order machined/milled face on request.
For grade comparison, see ABS grades. For machining and fabrication parameters, see the ABS machining guide.
