Material Overview
What is PPO GF30?
PPO GF30 is a 30% glass-fiber-reinforced grade of polyphenylene oxide (PPO), engineered for applications that require higher stiffness, better creep resistance, and improved thermal stability than unfilled PPO provides. The glass fiber reinforcement reduces thermal expansion, increases flexural modulus, and tightens dimensional performance under heat and sustained load while preserving the base resin's low moisture absorption and electrical insulation properties.
The combination of reinforced rigidity and PPO's inherent dimensional stability makes PPO GF30 well suited to precision structural components in environments where thermal cycling or sustained loading could cause an unreinforced engineering thermoplastic to deform. Chemical resistance and electrical insulation are retained from the base PPO polymer.
Typical applications include reinforced electrical housings, precision brackets and frames, pump and valve bodies operating at elevated temperatures, and structural components in industrial automation where stiffness-to-weight ratio and dimensional predictability are critical.
For applications where stiffness is less critical or toughness is the priority, see unfilled PPO. Contact Ready Plastics for available PPO GF30 dimensions and to request a quote.
Frequently Asked Questions
PPO GF30, answered
What is PPO GF30?
PPO GF30 is polyphenylene oxide reinforced with 30% glass fiber, delivering significantly higher stiffness, reduced creep, and better dimensional stability at elevated temperatures compared to unfilled PPO. It retains the base resin's low moisture absorption and electrical insulation properties.
When should I choose PPO GF30 over unfilled PPO?
Choose PPO GF30 when your application involves sustained loading, elevated temperature, or requirements for reduced deflection and creep. Unfilled PPO is preferred when toughness, easier machining, or lower cost is the priority.
How does glass fiber affect PPO's machinability?
Glass fiber makes PPO GF30 more abrasive than unfilled PPO, causing faster tool wear. Carbide tooling is recommended. With proper tooling selection and conservative speeds, good surface finishes and dimensional accuracy are achievable.
