Material Overview

What is POM-C Copolymer Acetal — Sheet & Rod?

POM-C material (acetal copolymer, polyoxymethylene copolymer) is an engineering thermoplastic produced by copolymerizing trioxane with a comonomer, yielding a more chemically uniform structure than homopolymer grades. It belongs to the broader acetal family alongside POM-H (Acetal Homopolymer) and is one of the most widely specified engineering plastics for precision machined components. Ready Plastics stocks POM-C plastic in sheet, rod, and tube to support industrial, automation, and fluid-handling applications.

POM-C delivers 9,450 psi tensile strength, 15,000 psi compressive stress at 10% strain, and Rockwell R115 hardness — a strong mechanical baseline for gears, bushings, cams, and valve components. Its short-term service temperature reaches 285°F, and its low moisture absorption (0.20% saturation in air at 73°F / 50% RH) ensures dimensional stability in humid and wet environments. Dielectric strength of 510 V/mil supports electrical insulation applications, while a density of 0.051 lb/in³ keeps component weight low.

Modified grades. Ready Plastics offers several POM-C variants for specialized requirements. POM-C Moly adds molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) for improved wear resistance in dry sliding applications. POM-C PTFE incorporates PTFE to minimize stick-slip and reduce friction further in dynamic assemblies. POM-C MT is a toughened grade for applications requiring enhanced impact resistance. POM-C SD is the static-dissipative variant for ESD-sensitive environments such as semiconductor processing and electronics manufacturing.

Machinability and applications. POM-C plastic machines cleanly on standard CNC and manual equipment, producing tight tolerances and smooth surfaces without excessive tool wear. Its combination of low friction, dimensional stability, and good chemical resistance makes it a dependable choice for fluid-handling valves, electrical connectors, precision slides, and wear pads. For applications demanding higher mechanical strength and fatigue resistance, see POM-H (Acetal Homopolymer).

Frequently Asked Questions

POM-C Copolymer Acetal — Sheet & Rod, answered

What is POM-C material?

POM-C (acetal copolymer) is a semi-crystalline engineering thermoplastic produced by copolymerizing trioxane with a comonomer. It delivers 9,450 psi tensile strength, Rockwell R115 hardness, and a short-term service temperature of 285°F, with low moisture absorption and excellent machinability. Ready Plastics stocks POM-C in sheet, rod, and tube for precision industrial applications.

What is the difference between POM-C and POM-H?

POM-C (copolymer) offers improved chemical resistance and thermal stability due to its copolymer structure, making it the standard general-purpose acetal. POM-H (homopolymer) has higher crystallinity and delivers greater tensile strength, stiffness, and fatigue resistance, making it the preferred choice for mechanically demanding applications.

What sizes and shapes does Ready Plastics stock in POM-C?

Ready Plastics stocks POM-C in sheet, rod, and tube across a range of standard dimensions. Material is available cut to order for prototyping and production. Contact Ready Plastics or see the datasheet for current stock sizes.

Can POM-C be machined?

Yes. POM-C is one of the easiest engineering plastics to machine. It cuts cleanly with standard milling, turning, and drilling operations, holds tight tolerances, and produces excellent surface finishes. Its consistent structure and low moisture absorption help maintain dimensional accuracy throughout machining and in service.

What is POM-C plastic used for?

POM-C is used for gears, bushings, cams, valve bodies, electrical connectors, slides, wear pads, and fluid-handling components. Its low friction, dimensional stability, and good chemical resistance make it a versatile choice across industrial automation, automotive, and electronics manufacturing.
