Material Overview
PEEK ELS is an electrostatic dissipative (ESD-safe) grade of PEEK — polyether ether ketone — engineered for semiconductor fabrication, cleanroom handling, and vacuum environments where both material purity and controlled charge dissipation are required. Standard PEEK is an electrical insulator with volume resistivity above 10¹⁴ Ω·cm; PEEK ELS is modified to target a resistivity window of 10⁶ to 10¹⁰ Ω·cm, ensuring reliable static charge dissipation without creating a conductive path that could damage sensitive components.
PEEK ELS retains the core mechanical and thermal profile of unfilled PEEK: 14,500 psi tensile strength, Rockwell R120 hardness, continuous service temperature of 480°F (245°C), and a UL 94 V-0 flame rating at both 3 mm and 6 mm thickness. Dimensional stability is excellent, with low moisture absorption supporting the tight tolerances typical of wafer-handling fixtures, carrier trays, and precision semiconductor tooling.
Grade selection. PEEK ELS is the right choice when unfilled PEEK's insulating resistivity (>10¹⁴ Ω·cm) poses a static-charge risk in controlled environments. If you need full electrical conductivity for a structural wear component, select PEEK CF30 — 30% carbon-fiber reinforced (volume resistivity ~10⁴ Ω·cm). For reinforced structural parts without ESD requirements, PEEK GF30 retains full insulation. For wear-critical parts in standard environments, see PEEK PTFE or PEEK PVX.
Applications. PEEK ELS is used in wafer carriers, end effectors, process chamber components, pick-and-place fixtures, and vacuum-compatible insulators where particle generation must be minimized and electrostatic discharge must be controlled. The material machines with the same ease as standard PEEK — carbide tooling, moderate speeds, and dry or minimal-coolant cutting — making it practical for precision components in low-volume semiconductor and R&D applications. Frequently Asked Questions
PEEK ELS is an electrostatic dissipative (ESD-safe) grade of PEEK (polyether ether ketone). It is engineered to maintain the high mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and thermal stability of standard PEEK — including 14,500 psi tensile strength and 480°F continuous service temperature — while providing a controlled volume resistivity of 10⁶ to 10¹⁰ Ω·cm. This resistivity range dissipates static charge reliably without creating a fully conductive path, making it suitable for semiconductor, cleanroom, and vacuum applications.
The primary difference is electrical resistivity. Standard unfilled PEEK is an insulator with volume resistivity above 10¹⁴ Ω·cm, which can allow static charge to build up on component surfaces — a risk in semiconductor and cleanroom environments. PEEK ELS reduces volume resistivity to 10⁶–10¹⁰ Ω·cm, enabling controlled electrostatic dissipation. Mechanical strength and thermal performance are comparable between the two grades.
PEEK CF30's carbon fiber reinforcement yields a volume resistivity of approximately 10⁴ Ω·cm — it is electrically conductive, not just dissipative. In sensitive semiconductor applications this can be too conductive and risk shorts or component damage. PEEK ELS targets the 10⁶–10¹⁰ Ω·cm dissipative window, which safely bleeds static without conducting current. CF30 is the better choice when structural stiffness is the priority; ELS is the better choice for ESD-safe precision components.
