Material Overview

What is PA66?

PA66 material (polyamide 66) is a high-performance extruded nylon plastic offering greater tensile strength, stiffness, and thermal capability than PA6. The improved mechanical and thermal properties result from the regular molecular symmetry of the PA66 polymer chain, which packs more tightly and resists deformation at elevated temperatures. Ready Plastics stocks PA66 in sheet and rod for machined gears, structural members, wear components, and precision industrial parts.

PA66 is the preferred nylon when load-bearing capacity and heat resistance are the primary design drivers. Its higher rigidity reduces deflection in structural applications, and its improved heat resistance supports use in environments where PA6 would approach its performance limits. The material maintains good wear resistance and can be machined to tight tolerances on standard shop equipment, making it practical for precision components across automotive, industrial, and mechanical engineering applications.

Modified grades. Ready Plastics extends PA66 performance with two variants. PA66 GF30 adds 30% glass fiber reinforcement for significantly increased stiffness and load capacity in structural applications. PA66 MOLY incorporates molybdenum disulfide to reduce friction and extend wear life in dynamic, sliding-contact applications — combining PA66's strength with enhanced tribological performance.

Choosing within the nylon family. PA66 is the strength-and-heat-resistance leader among standard extruded nylon grades at Ready Plastics. For lower moisture absorption and better dimensional stability in precision work, consider PA12 or PA612. For maximum thermal and mechanical performance, see PPA. For the toughest impact-resistant option, PA6 remains the workhorse. Explore the full nylon material lineup.

Frequently Asked Questions

PA66, answered

What is PA66 material?

PA66 (polyamide 66) is an extruded nylon plastic that offers higher tensile strength, stiffness, and heat resistance compared to PA6. It is widely used for gears, structural components, wear pads, and industrial parts that require reliable performance under load and elevated temperatures.

What is the difference between PA66 and PA6?

PA66 offers greater tensile strength, rigidity, and thermal capability than PA6. PA6 provides better impact toughness and is available as a cast grade for large sections. PA66 is the choice for applications where maximum strength and heat resistance matter; PA6 is preferred where toughness, impact resistance, and the ability to produce large cast sections are priorities.

What modified PA66 grades does Ready Plastics stock?

Ready Plastics offers PA66 GF30 (30% glass fiber reinforcement for increased stiffness and structural load capacity) and PA66 MOLY (molybdenum disulfide-filled for reduced friction and improved wear performance in dynamic applications).

What shapes does Ready Plastics stock in PA66?

Ready Plastics stocks PA66 in sheet and rod. Contact Ready Plastics for current dimensions and availability, or request a cut-to-size quote.

Is PA66 better than PA6 for all applications?

Not universally. PA66 leads in strength, stiffness, and heat resistance, making it better for high-load structural and thermal applications. PA6 has better impact toughness and is available as a cast grade in large sizes. For applications requiring the lowest moisture absorption, PA12 or PA612 are more appropriate. The right choice depends on the specific mechanical, thermal, and environmental requirements.
