Material Overview
PVDF material — polyvinylidene fluoride — is a semi-crystalline fluoropolymer that bridges the gap between the extreme chemical inertness of PTFE and the superior mechanical strength of structural engineering thermoplastics. PVDF plastic delivers excellent resistance to chemicals, solvents, and corrosive media while providing significantly higher tensile and flexural strength than PTFE — making it the preferred fluoropolymer for load-bearing components in aggressive fluid handling systems.
PVDF offers outstanding resistance to UV radiation, weathering, and moisture, enabling long-term outdoor performance that most engineering thermoplastics cannot match. Low moisture absorption and good abrasion resistance support consistent dimensional performance and extended service life in demanding environments. PVDF also exhibits favorable electrical properties, including moderate dielectric performance, which extends its utility to specialized electrical insulation applications.
Typical applications include chemical processing pipe fittings and valve bodies, semiconductor equipment components, fluid handling manifolds, pump housings, and outdoor structural parts requiring UV and weather resistance. In the semiconductor industry, PVDF's purity, chemical resistance, and low extractables make it a standard material for ultra-pure fluid handling and wet processing equipment.
Ready Plastics stocks PVDF in sheet and rod. For broader chemical inertness where mechanical load is minimal, see PTFE material. For a lighter, cost-effective chemical-resistant option, see PP plastic. Visit the PVDF product page for available PVDF sheet and rod dimensions and to request a quote.
Frequently Asked Questions
PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) is a semi-crystalline fluoropolymer combining excellent chemical resistance, UV stability, good mechanical strength, and low moisture absorption. It is widely used in chemical processing, semiconductor equipment, fluid handling, and outdoor applications requiring long-term resistance to harsh environments.
PVDF offers significantly higher tensile strength and better abrasion resistance than PTFE. PTFE has broader chemical resistance — essentially inert to all but a handful of substances — and a lower coefficient of friction. Choose PVDF when mechanical strength matters alongside chemical resistance; choose PTFE for maximum chemical inertness and lowest friction.
Yes. PVDF's combination of chemical resistance to the acids and solvents used in wet processing, low extractables, and good dimensional stability makes it a standard material in semiconductor wet benches, fluid distribution manifolds, and process equipment components.
Ready Plastics stocks PVDF in flat sheet and round rod. Contact us or visit the PVDF product page for current thicknesses, diameters, and cut-to-size options.
Yes. PVDF machines well on standard CNC turning, milling, and drilling equipment. It produces clean cuts with sharp carbide tooling. PVDF can also be welded using hot-gas or extrusion welding methods for fabricated fluid handling components.
